I share my house and my heart with Daisy, Rufus, Lily, Puck, Oodles, Tabitha, and my fosters Snow Queen, Tigre, Peanut, and well I haven't named that one yet.
Daisy is a three year old Jack Russell/lab mix. She was slated to be euthed by the Santa Clara Co. pound due to some really bad behavioral problems. Fortunately, aggression wasn't one of them but uneducated owners were. They taught her to jump on people and then yelled at her until she started submissive peeing. She's much better now. Obedience classes, consistency, and trips to the dog park did wonders. Rufus is a year old Briard or Bearded Collie mix. According to the Briard folks most dogs that are supposed to be Briard mixes are Bearded Collie mixes. Frankly, he looks and acts like a Briard. To us he is just a big silly dog who likes to herd everything. At the pound he rounded up all the puppies in his run like he was their mother. He tries to herd the cats. Notice I said tries. Lily is a 7 year old used to be feral cat. She now gets totally irritated if her human isn't around (my daughter). Puck is a 4 year old smoke cat who likes to watch glasses break. He will push them off any surface so I have child locks on cupboards and plastic glasses. Oodles was raised by some folks and not socialized well. She doesn't like anyone but me and hisses at the world. She also sleeps next to my head and purrs up a storm. I think she's also got really poor vision. She doesn't really know who you are until you blow in her face. Tabitha is three now. She hails from the Palo Alto shelter. She was in a two foot by two foot cage and is claustrophobic. Whoever had her allowed this very diminutive cat to become pregnant. She had her kittens and they dumped her. When I met her she was shreading her cage card on a daily basis and everything else in sight. Her least favorite thing was being put back in that cage. She now has the run of my three bedroom house and two car gargage. Sometimes even that is too small and she just has to escape. She wrecks screens and slips out between folks feet before they even see her. I'm trying to get the back yard fenced with one of those things that are supposed to keep cats in. Hopefully, that will be enough!

The fosters are doing better today. This cat was way too small for kittens. I had to force feed her for four days but she ate this morning. Hopefully, all of them will make it. In the meantime...spay or neuter your pets and please encourage others to do the same. There are too many animals without homes.

That's funny that you said your dog tries to herd your cats because our Sheltie X puppy keeps trying to herd our cats, too! LOL

The only thing is that when you nip a cat on the heels it just doesn't go in the direction the dog thinks it should. My cats either go up to the nearest perch or turn around to fight back. I've never heard of sheep turning around to take a swipe at a herding dog!!!

Briards are very physical herders. Rufus pushes the cats in the direction he wants them to go. If they don't comply, he picks them up. He has huge paws compared to his size and uses them to gently but firmly pin cats and small dogs. He washes everything he can reach.
