Most of you know I have a 2 year old Great Dane(Cleo),,I also have a 9 1/2 year old Spanial(Samantha).Samantha has NEVER liked Cleo,, would growl at her,, and Cleo would always back away.Well now Cleo is 150 pounds(and still growing)and she's going back at Samantha. They just went at each other,,I broke thim up with a squirt bottle(Cleo hates water) I'm really afraid Cleo will hurt Samantha(60pounds),,just her size alone could hurt her,,without biting. Do you think they will ever get along??I try to keep them apart most of the time,, but it's not fair to either one of them.. Help!!What would you do??I've had each dog from a puppy. IP: Logged |

is there anything both dogs like to do.like taking walks if so you could try having them do it together.and if they get along show them that it pleases you.continue to do that as much as possible and they might become friends. IP: Logged |

IT sounds like a dominance thing to me. Which ever dog is dominant reinforce that with things you do. Alot of times if dogs dont know their status or compete for status that is when things get ugly. And with dogs of those totally different sizes it could lead to your smaller one getting seriously injured. Most of the time it is the one that shows the aggression that is the one trying to get dominance. My suggestion would be to treat your dane as the top dog. Nothing major needs to change Just do things with your dane first put her food down first, put her outside first, give her a treat first, subtle things that shows the order is confirmed by you. Other than that the only thing I can suggest is keep them separated and never let them alone together. Just some thoughts. IP: Logged |

Sometimes they just need to be able to work it out between themselves. In many (not all) case I find this the best way for them to establish whos who. You might see a squirmish or two and they often sound worse what they are, but they usually manage to work things out (under supervision to ensure things don't get out of hand). Just make sure there are no toys, food, or people around so they will not get posessive. Size isn't always a factor, I've seen plently of smaller dogs put larger ones in their place and hold their own. Small size could be an advantage, she is prob. much more agile and quick. Being that Samantha is 9 and was there first, and was the one who usually growled, I think seniority should be given to the older dog. Cleo is at that age where she is testing the water to see what she can get away with. My thought is that you and Samantha should try and reinforce Samanthas seniority.
