Hello everyone — I am currently consuming approximately 6-8 (mostly) hard-boiled egg whites each day in connection with a weight loss program. It seems like a terrible waste to just throw away that many egg yolks every day just because I can't eat them!

I just moved to a new place, and my landlord (who is also on the premises) has a beautiful German Shepherd. I would love to offer the egg yolks to this dog (with the landlord's permission, of course), but before I do, I'm curious about two things which I hope you can clarify for me:

1) Most of the research I've done this morning regarding optimal diets for dogs indicates that raw food is better than cooked. So I'm wondering if the cooked egg yolks would thus be a bad idea? (I do end up with *some* raw ones each day as well, so I can save those).

2) How many is too many? Would 8 per day be overdoing it?

I'll wait to hear back from you guys before I make the offer. Thanks so much!

P.S. - I also forgot that this is a temporary residence and I'm not sure how long I'll be staying here (could be a few weeks or a few months). So another question I'm wondering about is if it would have any adverse effect on the dog's system to have these daily servings of egg yolks for a sustained period of time and then to suddenly stop? Of course, if I move to a permanent residence that is close enough, I'll likely continue to get the yolks to the dog, but that's an unknown at this time. Thanks again! — Karen S

Raw vs. Kibble....is a topic of discussion among dog owners. Not all agree that raw is always better and there are other factors to consider when choosing food for your dog, but you asked about eggs yolks. I have fed my dogs raw eggs occasionally and I have known people who feed a raw egg daily to their dogs. I would think the egg yolk would offer the same benefits or negatives to a dog that it would to a human. They would be high in cholesterol for dogs too, and I wouldn't feed my dog 8 of them a day cooked or otherwise. I would give as a treat...but not 8 of them. As for having them for a period of time and then stopping...same for dogs as humans. Dogs should have variety in their diet just as humans should, unless there is a medical reason not to. The old thought about keeping a dog on the same food and not ever changing is just that..an old thought. When putting your dog on a new food, you should still mix with the old and slowly increase the amount of new food in the feeding. I think Jas would be a good person to ask about this as well...he may have some links that are useful in answering your question or a differing view. Jas?

Hi Karen, That's sweet of you to think of the dog!

I believe raw eggs should be fed whole, the whites & yolk do need each other to balance out the biotin. Cooking changes the structure so I am not sure about cooked yolks (cholesterol???)

I think 8 eggs whole, part, cooked or raw per day is way too much for a dog. A few once and a while is probably not going to hurt.
