Hello everyone. I am concerned about my dog. Last Friday she started whining a lot for apparently no reason (at all times of day, including middle of the night). It seemed like she was either in pain or something was really bothering her. In addition to this whining, she would go to weird places in the house (usually extreme corners) and lay down. One of the nights when she was whining she jumped up on my bed and laid down next to my legs -- this is something she doesn't normally do (she doesn't like to cuddle). We've had her for a year (got her from the dumb friends league -- she is a chow mix) and have never seen her act like this. She is a young dog, only about a year and 8 months. We took her to the vet and he seemed to think everything was fine. Her temperature was just a tad bit high (not enough for concern). Although the vet seemed to think everything was fine, he handed me some literature on seizure disorders in dogs for reference. I began to become concerned that she may experience seizures. Well, last night the whining stopped (to our relief), but she still has been retreating to weird places in the house (tonight I found her laying down in the bathroom next to the toilet). She doesn't seem to have nearly as much energy as she had a week ago, so I'm wondering if something is really wrong with her. Does it sound like she just has a cold or could it be something more serious, such as pre-seizure behavior? I'm wondering if I should take her in for more tests. Anybody seen this kind of behavior before? Thanks for your input. Jon IP: Logged |

Hi Jon, Given the information you just gave, if you are asking what I would do....definately take her back in to the vet and ask for another exam. Dogs hide pain really well...so if she seems in pain to you...I would say she is. I don't have any experience with dogs having seizures, I have had them myself after a head injury and surgery and I know that they are exhausting, one small seizure would just wipe me out. I never experienced pain, but they were very upsetting, stressful. I would be persistent in expressing to your vet that she is not acting normal at all. You didn't say what if any tests were run...but your dog is telling you something with her behavior and as hard as it is to figure it out, I would make every effort for her sake. IP: Logged |

Hi Maisey. Thanks for the concern/response. I am happy to report that she appears to be back to normal now. Autumn is chasing her frisbee again and has plenty of energy. Think she may have just had a really bad cold or something. I'm going to still watch her closely, but I think she is fine now. Jon IP: Logged |

sounds a bit like echrilicosis. This is a lethal disease and the only signs are "my dog is just acting weird." They act "not themselves" for a while and then go back to normal. Then, it sets back in (even years later) and they die. I would get a CBC. Then, even if it isn't echrilicosis, you have a base count on your dog should he ever get sick later. This is the most misdiagnosed K-9 disease out there. It is easily treatable if caught early with a round of anti-biotics. If not caught in time- it's too late. IP: Logged |

I could not find anything on this condition. JMR, could you check your spelling please, and re-post? I would like to research this disease.

Hi, Glad your pooch is back to normal! As soon as I started to read your post I had to smile, it sounded exactly like the behaviour my Rottie exhibits when she is coming in heat. She whines, has to lay on my bed, carries toys around that she normally doesen't pay attention to, even acts like the toys are her puppies, takes them to her bed and cuddles them. She acts like this twice a year for about a week. Hopefully your baby is fine. justme~ IP: Logged |

My poodle has had a couple of small seizures and I have noticed that she is more apt to be distant and want to sleep under the bed or go into the living room. Usually she will sleep with me, but she will get very restless and want to get off the bed. I will let her and keep an eye on her. After the siezure she is back to normal. I have only seen two of them. ------------------ IP: Logged |
