We just adopted a 3 year old jack russell terrier mix from the spca. He wasn't house broken so at first we tried housebreaking him without a crate and that didn't work. We ended up getting a crate and things have been going well the last few weeks when all of a sudden out of the blue he peed on the basement floor with my husband 10 feet away. Then, today, we left him alone for 4 hours and when we got home he peed in his crate! We took him out right before we left and he peed so we don't understand? Then, we left again a few hours later, this time, we were gone only 2 hours and he peed in his crate again?!?!

We always take him out right before we leave and he does pee. Our vet recommended urine tests for infection and handed us a pill bottle to collect his urine. (Yeah right?!?) Our dog has tons of energy and it's near impossible to get a urine sample. Any ideas why he's peeing in his crate and what we can do to stop this? Thanks in advance!

Hmm, it could be that his crate is too big. Does he get water (if so alot?) before you leave? He could be suffering from seperation Anxiety and may be he is just nervous/hyper/scared and pees. I'm kinda thinking it is a urine infection. I'm not sure but it sounds like it. keep us informed!

Yes...Urine infection is my thought too. The challenge is collecting the sample. Try putting a bowl of some sort under him when he start to go. This will collect the urine and you can transfer it to the pill bottle the vet provided.

If his crate is too big for him, make it a little smaller by putting a box in it to take up some room.

Separation Anxiety is a good thought too, and I believe he might be a candidate if he had another family that had to give him up. I read once the the scent of marigold flowers is soothing for dogs (go figure!).

Ohh, I had an idea. Try putting an old t-shirt or something that still has your scent in his crate. This helps with seperation anxiety!

I have to collect urine samples from my Poodle so I can test it with some strips I was given by the vet. I have to do this every two weeks. Yes I tried the silly little bottle the vet gave me...yes I got peed on. LOL, then I wised up, put my dog on a leash and carried a large bowl(make sure it will fit under him),I just slip it under him mid stream. The only issue I can see with doing this when an infection is suspected, is contamination. The bottle he gave you may be sterile...your household bowl is not. If it gets you the sample though it's better than nothing. You should rule out any physical stuff ASAP, when thats ruled out, start thinking about it from a behavioral point of view. Good Luck!

Try taping the cup/bottle to a yardstick or dowel rod, that way you don't have to freak them out by bending down and shoving it under them while they're trying to go. If you can't get a sample with that, try sterile gauze or even cotton balls on the stick, and then just plunk them into a container. The vet should be able to get enough for testing through either of those way. Once when Haley was being tested for keytones in her pee (when a diabetic isn't getting enough insulin, they pee out the excess sugar, the medical term for that is keytones), the vet once scooped some pee of the floor with a syringe and tested that, so I don't think sterility is TOO much of a concern in most cases (you can check with your vet just to be sure).
