First..is your dog lazy because it is a part of his personality? is he overweight? What excites him? Is he a "talker", bark alot?
Second... when it comes to tricks, I have learned it is easier to find something your dog does naturally and expand on it, turn it into a trick. My dog does a whole mess of tricks, but he won't speak on command. I have a Poodle...all he WILL do is "sit", "down" and "speak".
My Aussie mix will play dead, roll over, high five, shake, get the mail, get the newspaper, volley a ball with you, he will go find the kids and my puppy when told. Our newest is opening the fridge door, I will add to that bringing me a pop and closing the door. He does many more tricks as well, in addition to all the normal commands. Many of them came from something he was already doing. For instance..getting the mail...he loves to retrieve things for you, if you tell him "get it" as long as he knows the name of what you are asking for he will. So we started teaching him the names of things. Newspaper, lighter, dish(dog food bowl), toy, ball, baby etc., he catches on quick. One day he saw the mail lady put the mail in the box...we watched him try to look in the box by standing on his hind legs, he pawed at the lid until it came loose a bit and then used his mouth to pull it down the rest of the way. We praised him big time, and told him "get the mail" it took about twenty times of saying it excitedly and pointing at it before he figured a way to grab it, but he did and we made a huge deal of it, let him bring the mail to the house and gave him treat. A couple more sessions of taking him out to the mailbox and encouraging him to "get the mail" and he had it down. When the mail lady comes he gets all excited and paces at the door until we let him out. He still doesn't like the mail lady though!
Getting him to speak has been hard because the only time he barks is when he feels threatened, thats the wrong time to try and teach a trick and certainly not the time to offer a treat. Maybe someone else has advice on how to get your dog to do it, but I reccomend finding something your dog already does, something that fits his personality. If he is generally a quiet dog and doesn't bark when he is excited already, it may be a hard trick for him to learn as well. Good luck. Smiles, Maisey

I guess there are "barkers" and "non-barkers"......other than the pitter patter of little feet, we would never know Sugar is on the place. SHE ALMOST NEVER BARKS....only when she hears something...see's something...yada yada....it's almost a joy to hear her then. Otherwise she is MUTE and that's fine with me, I hate YAPPYING DOGS.

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, I don't think I'll try to teach her to SPEAK.

She knows the names of all her toys and words like: Home(her crate) Nite Nite (she goes to bed at night), supper (goes for any meal), Down, Come, Sit, Stay, Hold on (in the car), It's okay (that's a big one...immediately I say that, she's OK about stuff), She'll fetch if you call the name of it too, and knows her other stuff like: Outside, hurry up, do your business, the word GO, and the biggest one is : TREAT She is some sweet spirited dog for sure. A LAP DOG BIG TIME.....loves to be loved and to love....what else is there ?

Blessings and good luck with your TEACHING TRICKS....they really learn easily...just a little time, patience and TREATS they love.

Just for smiles.....

Last night my husband and I were joking around about teaching our dog Dooley(the aussie mix), to hold a fishing pole. When we go fishing, if one of the kids sets their pole on the ground and you tell him to "get it" he will try to pick it up. Now...if he could hold his own pole, do I have to get a fishing license for him, or since he is only two, does he get to fish without? If he eats his fish on the spot...does that do away with the limit? All you can eat fish buffet LOL, Imagine the Game Wardens face!

Maisey: Last night while watching tv. I noticed a kibbles and bits comercial. It has a comical aussie dog dancing around it was funny. The dog is fake though, but funny. Keep your eye out for it I have just seen it once so its probably new.

Cool! I'll watch for it. The lady I have been buying my dog food from just told me she has a friend who is a "pet agent" for lack of knowing what her job title is...she finds dogs and other pets for commercials, ads, TV etc., she also has her own animals that she trains for such jobs. She offered to introduce us. I thought it was interesting and fun sounding, don't know if it would lead to anything for my dog, or if he would even like it, but it would be great to pick her brain about training! ( I promised Dooley that any money he ever makes from anything he does would go to buy him a pitching machine and stock in tennis balls)

When I was growing up, I had 2 dogs. One of them would speak on command, and the other would do every other trick she knew, but we could not get her to speak.

So, we started training sessions with both dogs. We would make them sit about 5 feet apart from each other. We would look at the one who knew the command and say, 'Taffy, SPEAK'. She would speak and get her treat.

Then we would look at the other dog and say, 'Lucky, SPEAK.' When she looked at us and didn't do anything, we would give the same command to Taffy, and Taffy would get the treat.

Believe it or not, Lucky eventually learned by watching Taffy. I don't know, Jam if you have another dog to help you train, but this might help Maisey!
