We are hoping to find some help/info from you all. Our 1 yr old dog Sasha has been having trouble with her bowels on and off for the past 3 months (maybe evenlonger). She is under a vets care but i'm looking for someone who has had some experience with this. When she has a movement, it kindof looks like pudding and mixed with mucus. When she takes her med. FLAGYL (30mg) 1 time a day it is like a miracle. Movements are fine yet when she is off the meds in about 5 days her movements are pudding/mucus again. She has had all the worm meds again, changed over from purina chick&rice to Iams liver&rice. Even after slow switch and off meds still did not improve bowels. Doc said that it might be IBS yet we haven't gotten involved with blood testing or tests. He an us also do not want her to be on the meds for long term (longest has been 1 month straight)He thinks she might have trouble with novel proteins and suggests to next slow change over to a food for sensitive stomach. Mentioned a Z DIET dog brand food. Can't find info on it. Not sure what brand might work for her. Can anyone help us along with this. All info would be greatly appreciated!

Sorry so long of a post yet so much had to be explained.
thank you,
Marie P.S. you can also e-mail me.

Bellasmommy, did you have to get the food "innova" from the vet or a major pet store? Also do you know what this food is make of (fish, beef, duck). Seems like the two I was looking into (Science Diet & Pro Plan ,purina) are made with fish, oats and some chicken.

thank you for responding.

4sunshines.. innova has to be bought from a specialty store (specialty pet shops, some groomers, and some natural food store carry it).. you can go to www.naturapet.com and find a location nearest to you that sells it.. the one i use is mainly turkey and chicken.. innova is more expensive than supermarket brands; however, it is made with less fillers and therefore the pup needs to eat less.. i had heard rave reviews about this food from other dog owners and tried it out.. i'm really happy with it.. look at their site, it has a lot of info, including different foods they make, the ingredients used and where to buy.. good luck to you and sasha

My poor Yorkie unfortunately can no nothing fun to eat....Could this be the problem...Even Treats from the PetSmart run him off...One day while I was traing I even gave him bits of cookie...maybe two treats total...The next day, boy did I pay for it....I may just be sensitive stomach...That's my bet...The only thing he can eat that doesn't produce the brown pudding is his puppy food..Eukanuba, or baked chicken.....

When I'm training I have to use the baked chicken for a treat...something he doesn't get a lot of.

Check out Maisey's Food for Thought thread, maybe you can find something there to help. I switched my dog to Innova after reading all the raves about it and checking out the ingrendients. You can find it at more stores then just "specialty" stores. Our all natural food store has it as well as our local feed store Agway. I live in the boonies and found a store within 10-15 mins so hopefully you won't have too much trouble finding it. Like bellasmommy said it is more expensive than most foods but it is a very good food and you feed less of it than other foods. Good Luck!

It sounds like what Jas said. colitis. If the vet rules it out. Natura company sells california natural which is good for sensitive dogs. Also there is natures balance. I believe both are duck and potatoe. We use Innova by Natura. Good luck and keep us posted on what the vet says.
I just read someones post at another forum that does not like Flagyl. She says that there other things to use. By the way this is my Sasha on the left.

Hi, I have had IBS off & on for the past 10 yrs. From experience I know that it caused by these 2 things. Nervousness & over growth of yeast in the gut. Humans & animals all have yeast in the intestinal track which is called good bacteria or friendly flora. You can read about Candida Albican/or Ablican yeast on the internet or go to the library. I have read in the Maltese/poodle/bishon site that wet dog for is so bad for them. It rots their teeth & causes allergies. We have experience in that to & it's right. We were also told not to feed them Beneful as it's bad on teeth & causes allergies. Play some soothing enviromental music for your dog. They love it. Get into their head.

Oh yeah, the Flagyl is an anti yeast drug that used to be given to human females for yeast a certain severe yeast condition. They found out that cervical cancer often developed later in life because of this drug. Hummm..... What I was trying to say before is that you may want to treat the yeast in your dogs gut. Take the advice of the others on changing what you feed the dog. IBS is also caused by food allergies. Good luck

What about Precise Sensicare, I don't know anything about this condition, but I just read about that being an option for dogs with IBS. http://www.precisepet.com/

Matties mom said this condition is caused by yeast, How about a probiotic supplement. They do carry them for dogs and there are also foods that have probiotics. Probiotics are good in you have intestinal problems
