I have a 5 year old beagle which we got about 2 months ago. She has a bit of a history, but is a lovely dog.

We had a couple of accidents with her when she first arrived, but I put that down to anxiety and not knowing where to go to ask to go out. However, in the last week or so these accidents have increased and she is both weeing and pooing in the night, and I can't seem to work out why.

She does not have much to drink in the evening, and we feed her in the morning and she doesn't have many scraps in the day. She knows she shouldn't do it, and we tell her off and make her go to her bed, but I don't know what else to do. She sometimes asks to go out, and I will get up to her, but if she doesn't ask I don't know. She sleeps downstairs, whilst we are upstairs.

Hi Diane,
Sorry to hear you are having a problem with your dog. It sounds like to me she may be lonely. I don't want to believe her behavior is intentional. There is usually a valid reason but finding out exactly what that is can be a challange. Was she used to sleeping alone before you got her? You might want to try a crate (appropriate for her size) and put her in the room with you. She may feel more secure with you near her. GOOD LUCK!!!

Thanks for those thoughts. Unfortunately she can not sleep in the room with us, as my husband is asmatic and we try and kep the up stairs of the house dog free.

I did try the crate last night (but with the door open to get her used to it), and we had an accident free night.

I am sure it is all just part of her settling in, but if I can help her, then I would like to....

Anyway, we shall see how the crate goes!

You can always try leaving a radio or TV on so she can here it. Sometimes that will help because she knows that when your around that it is on. I have had some success with it when I have had animals that were nervous about being alone. Worth a shot!

I do leave it on when I am out in the day, and I hadn't thought to leave it on over night. That is a good idea, I shall try it. Thanks!

We only had one accident over the weekend, so maybe things are getting better...
