We have a Shih-Poo who is just about 1 year old. She was in heat and we were very carefull to keep her safe during this time, but apparently not good enough. She was paid a visitor by a lasa apsa (sorry about the spelling) My questions are he is maybe 5 to 7 lbs bigger will this hurt her. How many should be expect and what would you call them. We are sure she is expecting it has only been about 2 weeks but we have noticed some changes. Her vulva is still larger then normal and her nipples are also changing. Would love to get some insight into my questions. Thank You.

It's possible that what she's showing is only a false pregnancy, sometimes they will get milk and everything. The only way to be sure is to take her to the vets and have her x-rayed or have the vet feel for pups (I think pups will show on x-rays after 3-4 weeks, longer if the vet just feels for the pups).

I'd suggest talking to the person (breeder) who sold you your shihtsu poodle mix and explain what happened, if they have any sort of ethics they will assist you through this. A female in heat is never to be left alone uncrated or supervised. Its too bad your friend's, neighbour's, or whoever it was UNneutered male was also left unattended. Unless this breeding was intentional -- but hopefully it wasn't considering your dog is still a baby at under a year old. The signs you've noticed are signs of pregnancy, but as Goob said could also be a false pregnancy.

Make an appt. with the vet to have her checked over and so he can recommend what you do. Some vets will even "take care" of the pregnancy and spay the dog at the same time for those who do not wish to deal with unwanted pregnancys or a pregnancy that will compromise the health of the female.

A vet can do an ultrasound around 21-28 days to see if there are pups. I'd recommend purchasing some books on pregnancy and whelping, as well as look up some info on the net to prepare yourself. Anyway if she is preg she will need prenatal care and feeding will need to be changed. You will also need to make a whelping box and purchase some tools & supplies for after the birth. Hopefully after all this you will have her spay and wont be faced with this again.

good luck
