hi, I have a question for those of you that use the topical anti flea and tick meds. My other dogs use frontline plus. MY little maltese/pekingnese mix doesn't use anything yet. He is now 14 weeks . I took him to the vet and they said they didn't want to use it on his til he was 5 pds. They told me to use dishsoap during bath time for fleas. Well since then I have found a couple of ticks on them. They also reccomended putting baby oil on him to smother the fleas. Now I had a lhasa years ago that did have a reaction to frontline so I am a little nervous about it too but I didn't notice the dishwashing liquid or the oil helping . And it took for ever to get the oil out!Would you use it on your puppy that weighs 2-3 pds.If not then what do you use on the tinie tiny dogs???They said you can't go by age you have to go by weight and this dog probably wont get to be 5 pds even as an adult.

I do know that if you can get your dog to eat garlic (mixed with food) that can repel fleas. Also there are some good herbal mixtures(like lavender oil, but well diluted) but you'd need to do a web search.
The ticks are a worry though, I don't know what to suggest for them.

If I were you I would contact the manufacturers of Frontline (on the packet) and ask their advice. Maybe half of the dose for the smallest dog would be ok. I'm using Advantage at the moment, which is a similar product, which says it's ok for dogs "up to 8 pd", but that's in Australia, so it may not be in the states. Sorry I can't help more.

Hi, try the product called Revolution. It's topical and can be used on dogs 5 weeks and older. There is a category for your size and weight of dog too. Ask your vet about it.

I have a small toy dog and the vet gave me Advantix for him. He is only 2 lbs. and they said that this is the recommended starting weight for this flea, tick, and mosquitoe control. Good luck.
