Hi everyone...boy do I need help..after 10 years of my kids asking for a dog, I finally caved in and am regretting every minute of every day. I do not know the least thing about them and have always be afraid fo dogs myself. I have so many questions and hope that some of you can help me. The dog is an 8 week old yorkie poo. During the day, how long can it stay in the crate without it being a cruel thing? How do you train it not to go into certain rooms? What time do you put it to the crate for the rest of the night? Should you leave food and water out all day or give it certain times a day then take it away? How often to bathe it? I have so many more ?s but do not want to overdo it..obvioulsy I am overwhelemed so I appreciate anyhelp that you can give...please email me at rose_h65@hotmail.com if you can help.

Much appreciated!!

Sounds like you have an adorable puppy. I found that my best help was to go to the bookstore and buy the best books on puppies and training dogs I could find. They are also available at the library. You will find that if you follow the "instructions" you will have a lovely dog that the whole family will enjoy and you will wonder why it took you so long to get to know dogs as delightfulpets and companions.

Its too bad the breeder sold you a dog without providing you with information, even the basics.....? (sigh)

Anyway a pup as young as yours will need to be let out for a bathroom break every 2-4 hrs. The crate training article goes into more detail but you will not want to leave your pup in there for more than 4 hrs at a time. You should be feeding your pup 3 times a day right now. I like giving them their meals at set times and not having food sit out all day. This way they are less fussy and I can monitor how much they eat. If you don't want your pup in some rooms close the door or get a baby gate.

Here are some articles to get you started:

When I first brought home my puppy (7 years ago) I didn't know what hit me. I'd never had one before. But I read every book I could get my hands on in the library (didn't have a computer then, but would now do web searches, there are some terrific sites).

The advice already given is very good. Re bathing, not too often, ie about every 2 weeks. Have you checked with the vet about when to worm it? And it will need flea preventive treatment later on.

Re the crate, I think 4 hrs is way too long for an active puppy.Personally I don't like frequent use of crates. Maybe give it an area which it can move freely in and protect it with a baby-guard or playpen. Also, if you can, find a puppy school to go to. The advice there will be invaluable for you and the dog. It is just the right age to learn the Sit, Stay and Come commands, and leash behaviour, all of which will help it to know what is right and wrong (and you ).

Give it plenty of toys to play with, particularly ones it can chew on, and each time it 'mouths' you, as puppies do, give it a chewy toy, or old sock .Play with it as much as you can yourself.

In time I'm sure you will come to love this little creature as it becomes part of your family. Have fun.
