i am unsure about what to do...i have been in search of a shi-poo puppy...but am now having doubts...

I have been to many websites...and read the web posts...and now i am not sure what to do. I want another puppy, because about 4 months ago my beagle had to be put down due to cancer. the shi-poo i already have, i bought at a pet store...(i now know how bad this was of me...but i had no idea the whole story at the time i got him)

I have been in contact with two breeders but after reading everything i am still not confident in going with one of them. I still go to my local shelters regularly, but i am sort of picky in what i am looking for...i need a fairly small sized dog, good with kids, doesnt need a TON of space, and is low shedding. The shi-poo i have now is simply perfect...and was why i was initially looking for another....

Please give me advice!

Have you checked any of the shelters in the surrounding counties, or even nearby states? Often, a rescue will let a dog go even out of state to a good home, and transport can probably be arranged if you can't pick them up yourself. Petfinder ( http://www.petfinder.com )has a pretty large listing of dogs, you can type in "poodle", or "shih-tzu", or any other small breed, and there should be quite a few small poo or shih mixes that are available (I don't think they have seperate listings for poodle crossbreeds, so you'll just have to search under the different components of the crosses). I will say though, that if you're not sure you feel comfortable with getting a dog from a particular person, better to go with your instincts, even if you have to wait longer to find one who you trust more. At the very LEAST with such a cross, I'd look for patellas being checked (they can be certified by the same group that does hips, but a vet can usually tell if they're ok just by watching the dog move, feeling around the joint, or by looking at x rays of the dog's "knees"; also, the lines should be free of allergies/skin problems; and there are some other things that I know should be checked in small dogs, but I'm not a "small dog person", so hopefully someone else can help you out with that.

Very happy to hear that you are properly researching getting a pup, you are on the right track. Finding the right breeder is extremely important! I agree w/Goob if you have doubts about the breeder keep searching! Make sure they can provide you with copies of health certificates and that the parents are free of genetic diseases.

Take your time searching too, the right dog WILL come along!

best of luck
