MY maltese/pekignese has very very cottony feeling fur. He has tons and tons of hair already at 3 months. I have a slicker brush and a metal comb from the groomers and have been brushing everyday. Sometimes all day it seems like. He still gets a little tangle at the skin which the groomer said was normal for his type of fur.It isn't matted yet because I dont let get that way but I am thinking of shortening his hair into a cute litte puppy cut.His hair is at least 2-3 inches off his back. Can anyone give step by step instructions and different styles of clips for him?He looks almost pure bred maltese except his fur is not perfectly white has a cream color and his legs in back are shorter the front like the peke. He shouldn't have to spend his puppy hood gettting groomed . I will still continue to brush only it will take less time and he won't get tangled a bad. Please be explicit on details of clipping such as do you go agaist the grain like up or down the back, up or down, or from side to side on both sides, up down or across belly. Clip legs with clippers or scissors and how to do them. what to do on face and neck and chest? what number of comb on clippers, what length , how to do the feet. I know it is alot of questions but i want to still have a fuzzy cut dog that is more comfortable and I am comfortable taking care of not worring all the time if he plays he'll get tangled. The groomer has said his adult hair won't be so fine and cottony, I don't know , Please help!

First of all when you bathe your dog do you blow dry his hair. With long hair it smooths out each hair folicle. I have a poodle. But when you clip if you go with the grain (of hair) it doesn't clip quite as short, against and it gets a closer cut. Some maltese have that fly away cottony hair all their lives some not, I gues you need to wait and see. But with buying a malt that usually means daily grooming especially if hair is kept long. Half inch does sound short , thats actually what length I choose for my poodle. I think you should buy yourself a good clipper and a video or check out pictures and try to go with what you see. Thats what I did. It takes time to learn and if you make a mistake at least you know it will grow right back out and can be fixed. It sounds like the puppy cut would be good for your dog. I know of one person thats keeps one of her malts full coated and the other short hair because the second one hates to be groomed. The malts I have seen around here are kept in short cuts. Do you ever put the top knot hair in a band. I hope I have been of some help.

try this, www.malteseonly.com Remember not to mention any websites like I am doing right now. They are strange that way or even the name of a shampoo. I think they won't let me post there anymore.

i got my 9 month old malti-poo professionally groomed for the first time ever just today and I am just thrilled with it. like your baby, Harley's hair felt like cotton...even cobwebby in that it was sooo fine and so easily matted. i tried to keep up with her grooming but swear to god, i'd go to work she'd be fine, come home & she'd have two or three good size mats. she had so much hair that i sometimes wouldn't even notice the mat for a day or two and then they were huge. a walk through the yard in the morning was a nightmare. every blade of grass or twig she came in contact with would stick to the long hair on her feet & tummy. it is ritual for me to put her in the sink after being outdoors to spray her feet off and the grass would just cling to her fur. she will only stand for minimal brushing & minimal wasn't doing it. i finally could not take it and i made the appointment.

I was very nervous. i wanted to keep my cute fluffy girl and i knew she would be stressed about being left with strangers but she and i both needed a break from the constant cleaning. overnite, she had developed a very long, thin mat on her tummy that was so close to her skin i had no idea how to get it out. my groomer was great. i told him i wanted her body short but i wanted to keep her face & head on the longer side because i wanted her pretty face. when i went to pick her up they had put a topnot in hair with bow, the rest of her body was clipped close. it took me a second to register that this was my girl but only a second, i just loved it. we live in NC and it was already 90 degrees and very humid today. this is going to be great not only from the grooming aspect but it will help her be a little cooler. also, i've always tried to keep the hair around her eyes short but i was very nervous about doing it myself. she would be very still for this thank god, but the groomer did a much better job than i ever could. she has beautiful bright black eyes that are totally clear now, shes just so pretty. (i took the top knot out though, it was cute for a bit but that just isn't Harley)

i know it was a long day for her and i know she probably did not enjoy the experience, but they clipped her nails, bathed her & groomed her all for $38. hopefully now i can keep up with her for a while. i'm going to continue trying to get her to like brushing more, as she matures she will spend longer periods of time not being so active so maybe theres hope for us yet. i guess what i'm trying to say is I totally encourage you to get your puppy clipped. i applaud you for trying to do it yourself. i didn't even want to think about that for the first time. maybe now that someone else has kind of shown me the result maybe i could, i don't know. but whether you do it or you get a groomer i don't think you'll be sorry.

this little maltese are a delight. Harley has brought more joy to my husband and I than I ever thought possible & we both just adore her. The only drawback is that while shes absolutely beautiful when shes clean & brushed she did not stay clean & brushed for very long. This cut is going to free us all up.
