Do you mean the same Benedryl humans take? What dose?

Why did you give it to your dog? For allergies? Or to help calm her down. I'd be curious as to what different people have tried to help calm their dogs down.

Yes Sally..human (childrens benadryl liquid) for allergy.

Pitbull thanks for your help. Should it have totally stopped the itching if it had been an allergy ?

Maybe she's hasn't taken enough yet...she sure did get WEIRD on me. Fell asleep in my hand whild I was cleaning her eyes...so cute.

But she got stubborn on the benadryl...funny huh...it is a MOOD ALTERING DRUG.

If she is itching as bad as you say she is,then it may take a while for the benadryl to kick in.I give my baby one pill a day.It prevents his skin from getting itchy. You said you are taking her to the vet today?Let me know what they had to say.it might not be allergies.

I have been thinking of giving my poodle benydryl for her springtime allergies. But I want to hear from more people of how well it works. I personally can't stand what benydryl does to me. I took it once and it really messed up my equalibrium and I had pull over and let my husband drive.

I have found the pitbull soltion to their ittching problem. I also have spend almost 3 months asuming it was an allergy, but its not. It a lack of a mineral in their diet. Also the regular dog foods do not supply this mineral nor do they provide the other vitimins and minerals required for the pitbulls fine coat. If you notice where the itching breaks out you really only notice where they can cause the most damage (basiclly where they can reach) Arm pits, behind ears, belly, etc. I hope you find this artically even if you have givin up on your pitbulls itching. so here is the solution....

You would think more Vets. would know about this but I think that they do, I think its a way for them to put me and every other pitbull owner in the poor house.

so any way you want to get you pitbull a shot of pregnosne (steroid) from the vet to calm the itching so it may heal. This will last a week then ask for pregnosone pills that will give once per day for a week, then once every other day for a week then once every 3 days and so on till they are gone (20 or so pills) while you are doing this you need to find a dog food produced by a company called Nutro(http://www.nutroproducts.com/ncdoglamb.asp and find the dog food called NATURAL CHOICE
ADULT LAMB & RICE fORMULAR. eMAIL ME WITH ANY MORE INFO! Methogod@aol.com "!! GOOD
LUCK

If yo go to this web site there is some info on dogs and benedryl.

Jake has a prescription for the same stuff as human chloritritem (sp)

I know benedryl zonks me so I can imagine what it does to a dog. when Jake takes his he is usually more quiet.

Methogod, how do you know it wasn't an allergy? How did you rule that out?
Prednisone does not cure -- it's only a palliative, meaning it simply silences your dog's own reaction to whatever is bothering the dog. The causative agent is still there.

Prednisone: (Cortisone Taken Internally)
The most common internal cortisone treatment is Prednisone, taken by mouth. This medicine acts rapidly.

Cortisone is a chemical (hormone) made by the human body, and is essential for life. Cortisone or corticosteroids, are widely used in medicine. They control allergies, inflammation, and many disease processes. Cortisone compounds can be applied to the skin in the form of creams, or taken internally by mouth or injection.
It is my understanding that Prednisone should not be used for long term solutions, while it is effective and definately has it's place in healing your dog...They do have several side effects, including lowering the immune response, increasing
drinking, urinating and appetite and predisposing dogs to diabetes and possibly pancreatitis. http://www.vetinfo.com/deffect.html

Scroll down on this link to "Glucocorticoids"
and read what it says: http://www.skinvet.com/content.asp?index=12

I am not telling you that Prednisone is bad...I am saying that it's not meant to be a long term solution and and may be the reason your vet was looking for alternatives, or trying to find the CAUSE.
Also, Nutro dog food is not a cure all, just because it has lamb and rice in it does not mean it is allergen free. If it works for your dogs great. Combined with using the prednisone you may not be able to tell if the dog food is helping or not.
I would advise someone whose dogs were having these issues to do their very best to find the cause and go from there.
Just my two cents worth.

Well said, Maisey, which is why I wondered which mineral it is that Methogod seems to think was missing from the dog's diet. I really think that is highly unlikely.

As Maisey said, it is more likely an allergy and changing foods can indeed help - but different foods work for different dogs. A food higher in omega-3 and omega-6 could help with the itchiness as well, assuming the dog is not still being exposed to the allergen.

And of course, this problem is not limited to pit bulls.

They say sometimes medicines have the opposite effect on children that they have on adults. Perhaps dogs are like children.

Shug has no more itching since I put her on Innova Food by Nutra. It's a great food and she is THRIVING on it and loves it.

Great it seems you have had the same results that I have. Now if I could get rid of those outside allergy causing things all would be wonderful for my poodle.
