As most of you know i have a 13 week old Maltese/Pekingnese mix. He is a great puppy , loving , affectionate, very smart.Already knows how to fetch and sit and is very consistent on learning obediance so far. He does very good when he is out of his crate which is most of the day but I take him out once an hour when he is out. When crated he seems to go to the bathroom in the crate no matter how often he is taken out. He goes when he is outside but 30 min. later he is peeing in his crate. Mostly just peeing. One of the problems is the crate is a small one but he is so tiny he has plenty of room to go at the other end of the crate. he doesn't cry to get out or anything. I am wondering if i shouldn't ask his vet to check for urinary infection?? Check his kidneys?? I have even tried limiting water at certain times such as at nap time. He is so sweet I don't think this is purposeful. And I dont' think he needs to be taken out MORE often so is it because he is out of his crate too often to learn denning ??? Or is it that he isn't old enough to get that instinct yet? I have crate trained all of my dogs at one time or another and once they were housebroken they were out all the time . I just dont' know if crating this puppy is helping other then keeping him safe why i am gone. Any suggestions would be great. I just want to make the puppy comfortable whatever I do. Thanks. In my humble and limited experience, the crate could be tooooo big. If it is big enough for her to have one end clear, it is toooo big. She needs to be in one that is only big enough for her to stand up, and turn around in, and not much else. IP: Logged |

I have the smallest wire crate available to my knowledge as I posted before that is one of my biggest problems. he is too small , crate is size small but not small enough. What do you reccommend or a pup less then 2 pds.??Thanks IP: Logged |

You can get one of those plastic crate/carriers like for small dogs or cats. You should be able to find them in most pet stores. And you probably only need basically a cat carrier right now which would run you 8-15 bucks depending on how well it is made IP: Logged |

How about use a pet carrier like pet taxi? I used a small pet carrier when my Yorkie puppy was about one pound^^. It worked well and I still use the carrier for travel. He still sleeps in it and it's small enough for a 1 pounder and big enough for 4 pounder(now he weighes 4 pounds) at the same time. I bought it at PetsMart...it was less than 20 bucks. IP: Logged |

I hadn't thought of using the cat carrier . The dog travel carriers at petsmart and walmart were for 15 pds or less. I bought one. I think I will go buy a cat one they are alittle smaller. Thanks IP: Logged |

Have you ever looked at www.petedge.com They have a couple of small crates the plastic ones for between $5.00 and 12.00. They have some cute little sweaters too. IP: Logged |
