I have a 6 month old Peek-a-poo, when can I expect her to go into heat ??? We are going to have her fixed, but was wondering how much time we have. We just got her 4 weeks ago and we are in the middle of housebreaking her at the moment. We hoped to put a little time into adjustment before that happens ? How long does it take them to get over it ? THANKS, IP: Logged |

She could go into heat at any time. If it were my dog, I'd get her spayed soon, because if not you're going to have to deal with her being in heat, which will make a lot more mess than a few pee puddles, and will have every "eligible bachelor" (or not ) trying to beat your door down to get to her. You won't be able to leave her alone outside (even in the yard, or a pen) for any amount of time, and if you have any unfixed males, you'll have to keep her seperate from them. She could have a "silent heat", in which there would be very few signs that she was in heat, but could still breed, leaving you stuck with a litter of pups. Or a false pregnancy afterwards, where her hormones would fool her into thinking she was going to have pups, she could produce milk, build a nest, and gather up all sorts of things to "mother" (one of our dogs went into heat almost right after we got her, then into a false pregnancy right after that... fun! She was spayed soon after. ). She should be pretty well adjusted by now, and spaying shouldn't interrupt that or her housebreaking too much. IP: Logged |

To my knowledge, spaying is for little lady animals. Neuturing is for little boy dogs. Fixed and Surgery are just names for either one. =) IP: Logged |

Yes , I completely agree with Goob. Females get over the inital spaying in a couple of days. After that they act like nothing happened. Just don't let go running around as the stitches need to heal. If she licks the stiched area put on a E-collar. It needs to be kept dry. No baths until after stitches come out. So bath her before she goes. That was funny (Sprayed). Maltese was right on the nose about who gets spayed and who gets neutered. They also lump them together and call it altered, besides fixed. IP: Logged |

Hey guys, about what age does a Male Maltese puppy need to be fixed? I want him to be fixed before he starts "Spraying around the house" Thanks! =) *smiles* IP: Logged |

Excellent post Goob! Great advise. Altering a pup around 6 months of age is about the standard time for either sex. IP: Logged |

If a female is spayed before the first heat, the chances of developing mammary tumors is significantly reduced. IP: Logged |
