We just rescued a 10 month old Chihuahua from the shelter and i have no idea how to house train him. I tried crating him last night but he yelled to the high heavens (poor baby) i felt so bad for him. I bought him the cutest little bed and he can't sleep in it because i don't want him peeing and pooping all over the house at night. How do i train him? I also bought a little doggie litter pan, i don't know what to do...oh also should i feed him purina one lamb and rice? Is that best for him? He's such a nervous little thing i don't want to yell at him for defecating in the house...PLEASE HELP!

OH...i forgot to ask also when we brought him home yesterday...he ran straight in the house and went to maybe 5 different spots in the house and lifted up his little leg and urinated. I was like...you little poo poo head!(smile) Why did he do that?

Several things could be causing this. i am no expert but this is what I would suggest , is he neutered??? I am sure he is if he came from a shelter???If not then he may be marking territory??Also when you first bring them to a new place they do holler and squeal. My new puppy did that the first 2 nights and then it was like he forgot about his mom and old litter. He is fine now. Also we have had him 3 weeks today and he still crys sometimes in his crate at night. I would not take him out everytime he does that or he will learn to control you . He will cry more and more because he knows you will let him out. They do learn to like the crate but it takes time.

try these links. Let us know if it helps.

My nuetered male will only lift his leg in our apt. if another male goes there first. My sisters male neutered poodle came over and the first thing he wants to do is make this area his. Of course it being Rufus's home he had to remark it with his own smell. If we did not watch their every move they would take turns remarking it. Yuck. I guess you have to catch him in teh act and tell him bad boy and take him out where you want him to go pee poop and give lots of praise. I agree with sheltie on not picking up the dog everytime he cries, she is a pro at it now, with her pup.

Thanks for the advice, we crated him today while we left and he cried so hard...my kids were hating me by the time we left. I kept him in anyway and we just got back home they took him outside and he pee pee and poop, will he ever get use to staying at home without being crated? That way he can just chill out in his house without having to be confined to the crate. He is neutered. I hate to ask this but i guess i will. Will his little "you know what" ever stop peeping out like it does? He can just be playing with my kids and "it" will start to peep out. They think it's hilarious and i think it's gross. Will it ever just stay "in" and not come out at all. Thanks in advance...new owner here...

Hi I had chi's for years, one in particular his name was bear. He only weighed 3 1/2 lbs and he did have this problem. I hate to say this but it was bigger than him..it was like too much weight for him..and yes it was embarrasing I never named him bear for that reason..when someone would ask name I would say it and they said "OH i see why" geesh.. worst part of it is he was only 5 inches tall to his withers..so wasnt much room from his belly to ground..he lived till he was 13 and most of the time..it drug around with him..no medical problems just a bear of his own problem..
Ok well keep us informed
