I hope you folks remember my latest post "Should I Take Bruins Sister?" If you do I then told you the horrendous condition this poor darling was in when I got her. I'm so happy with her...her tail is up, no cowering, eyes are brighter and she's learning how to play. My other dogs just love her, too. My heart broke when I saw the condition she was in...I still want to bite the woman's head off that had her.

Now here's the problem. I had mentioned that her breath is horrible, and she loves to kiss so it's a really BIG problem. My vet looked at her teeth and the back molars are doubled. The baby teeth are all decayed looking and the gums around them are red and inflamed (Badly). The permanent teeth look like they are okay. Coupled with the fact this poor dear was never fed properly and had to fend for herself against other larger dogs, she didn't eat much. Hence the low weight and lack of nutrients. The vet says she needs to have them removed under anesthesia. And soon.

Have any of you folks ever had this done and was it a relatively safe thing to do? I realize anesthesia is never a good thing and I'm worried sick, but I'm also worried about an infection. It already appears she may have one.

I would love to post a photo here of the two of them as well as my big-hearted German Shepherd but don't know how...that's another question.

Thanks in advance for your input...I like the tone of this board and have found some invaluable info.

Being put under anestesia is a touchy thing to do. Some dogs do well and other not. Small dogs can live a good life without their teeth. They can gum their food. I have heard a many people having their small dogs do well without their teeth. Just a few days ago, on the poodle forum i go to. The moderators 5 1/2 month old maltese pup was to have his baby teeth extracted or they may have come in like your little ones in the back did. Her little desi died on the table. All I can say is though if there is infection, it can lead to liver and other problems. Talk to your vet and make sure he takes blood tests to make sure she can handle being put under. They did all that for Desi, but he died anyway. I hope you still do it though because it is necesary. Mine has been put under with no problem, she is a min poodle.

Now I'm really in a quandry...Her baby molars in back appear infected around the gum line and are pushing the permanent teeth aside. It does appear to hurt her when she chews. She eats very gingerly. They obviously have to come out. When I talked with her vet yesterday I was told she HAD to have anesthesia...pain, trauma and safety were all reasons. They are doing testing on her in the morning before the surgery, but I'm still quite nervous about it. I'm teary eyed just thinking about it, especially after reading your post about Desi. Like I said she is so frail and her nutrition was very poor prior to me takng her.

On a positive note, she's doing great with the other dogs and looks healthier by the day. Such a sweetie. I just know she's grateful to be out of that hell-hole.

I have a poodle that came from the same type of hellhole. If I could only see where she came from. My imagination is pretty vivid though. I think that you just need to do what is best for the lil one. She can't live in pain with her mouth like that. I would go ahead and do it. Just make sure that her vet feels that she is healthy enough to start with.
Strong heart, no problems with livers, kidneys. That way you have a better start all together. By the way, I think you are an angel for taking her in.
