I have a 12 week old golden ret/lab mix, I am trying to do the whole crate training thing. My problem is he falls asleep about 10:00 pm I put him in his crate and I do not go to bed until 12:00 am he wakes up as soon as I go to bed, I take him out, then he wakes up again at 2:00 am , I take him out, then he wakes up for good at 4:30 am. How am I supposed to get any sleep? Is there somethng I can do to help him sleep througout the night? HELP PLEASE

That is part of having a puppy. He wakes up so much because he can only hold it for a short while. As he gets older he will sleep long.just hang in there.

Okay, so its a puppy and doesn't have the bladder to support holding for that long. But while in the crate should be able to last a few hours longer...a study was done that proves the metabolism slows down in the dog once in the crate. A dog that is left free to roam will only be able to hold for say 8 hours and dog in a crate can hold for up to 12 hours..Hence the *dog* NOT *puppy*

Wake up the dog before you go to bed and take out to potty. He should be able to hold for a few hours, then will need to go out. But I don't suggest you let the dog control when he goes out. Set your alarm so that you take the dog out. If you take the dog out of his crate while he's whining...he's learning that whining will get him out of the crate. Keep things simple and always be one step ahead of the dog.

Good luck.

yep.. it's part of being a puppy.. at 12 weeks of age your pup should not be expected to be able to hold it any longer than 3 hours max.. as your puppy grows older they will be able to hold it for longer periods of time.. you will not get the sleep you want until your pup is no longer a puppy.. you'll begin to notice every couple of weeks he'll be able to hold it for a little bit longer.. some say you they can hold it (hours) equal to age (months) during puppyhood.. ex: 3 mo. = 3 hrs. while 4 mos. = 4 hrs. and so on.. good luck.. remember you're a parent now, this pup is dependent on you
