I would suggest looking on pet finder or visiting a shelter...you never know what gems they have waiting for a home....the shelter I volunteer at right now has a purebreed Doberman he's a sweety and only 9 months old...such a lover...they also have many other dogs and many other breeds...but yeah I suggest checking there first.

I would say, that if you get a dog that needs grooming,(hair cuts every few months) It is generally a non -shedding dog. But needs lots of brushing clipping. Maltese and poodles fall into that catagorie. I know there are more I just can't think of anymore right now. Most other dogs do shed though even dogs with the shortest of hair. It really depends on what suits your fancy. I know from your other post you like the breeds I specified above. But there are sooo many to choose from. Both of my dogs are from local shelters. One a possible JRT mix w/border collie. I think, first decide if you want a dog that is very active,(are you active) or if you want a lap dog. If you get the wrong dog, it could mean it will end up back at the shelter. Get the temperment for your lifestyle as they would say. Do they have petfinder.com in Australia? I bet you could find just about any kind of dog that you can imagine there. I always look. Over here in Calif. They have a website that has just about all the shelter in calif. www.amrt.net They also have rescue groups , and private adoptions. See if they have something like that. The best thing to do if you are looking for a small type dog is to go to the shelters as soon as it opens. Then if you see a dog you like go put your name on the list, hopefully you are first. If no owners claim him, first come first serve. At least thats how its done here. Just think about what type of dog will suit your situation first. Good luck. By the way I really love the poodle breed. Border collies are really too, but very active. I don't want to sway you any way though.

I would suggest getting a Shih Tzu puppie. Shih don't shed very much if you keep them shaved and groomed. Shih Tzu's are also good with kids, my 3 year old niece pulls her tail and hits her and she just takes it. Their excellent well tempered dogs who love attention and are protective of their owners.

hey puttin.. more dogs that fall into the hair category are ones such as shih tzu's and lhasa apso's.. i've read that they are non-shedding and hypo-allergenic because they have fur as opposed to hair..
maree.. these non-shedding dogs tend to have longer fur; however you can keep them clipped.. typically short hair breeds are allergenic and shed..
good luck to you

I highly recommend Bichon Frieses - if they haven't been abused by a former owner. Their fur is wonderfully soft and puffy. I am allergic to most dogs, but not to Bichons. They don't shed. Most are affectionate and love to sit on laps. They are intelligent. See the book The Perfect Puppy for info on breed temperaments and such.
