I have a boxer that just had puppies just over a week ago. She had a litter of nine, all healthy. The puppies eat all the time. The mother eats all the time. I have her on puppy food. She is very thin and I am trying to fatin her up. I am worried about her teats. They are very swollen and hard. They are not lumpy but they do look like they are mis-shaped. I am not sure if they look funny because she is so thin. They are also very lopsided. Some are alot bigger then others. She acts like her normal self and the pups are getting enough food. Should I take her to the vet or is this normal? I know that her teats will be bigger and hard but this is extreme. Thank You IP: Logged |

you didn't say how old the mother dog is, age could be the reason for her condition. is she thin when bred? Is she bred evertime she comes in heat? have you ever taken her to a vet for a check up? If the pups are doing ok on her milk she must be supplying enough for them, but I would want to feed her somthing besides puppy food. somthing with more protien, and if there was any concern about her health at all, the vet would be the first place you should go. Thank You for your reply. She is almost 2 years old. This is the first time she has had pups. She has always been on the thin side but not this bad. I am going to take her to the vet today. Thank You Again. IP: Logged |

Sounds like it might be mastitis, poor girl. I'm glad you're taking her to the vet today. Please let us know what you find out. IP: Logged |

The mom is putting all her effort into making milk for the pups, that is why she is so thin. You can increase her food, but she will still be producing milk. Some bitches produce more milk than others so are "fuller" What you've described sounds somewhat normal. Mastitis is a painful swollen mammary gland, often either more red, discolored, firm, or lumpy than her other breasts. It may "pus" which will be different than her milk. How is her energy level and rectal temperature? How are the pups energy? You say she is eating all the time, that is a good sign. As a breeder do you have any books on whelping a litter? There should be a section about mastitis. IP: Logged |

Thank You all for your help. I took Daisy to the vet. The vet said she is just fine. I was glad to hear that. Pups are great too. IP: Logged |

Oh good! I'm glad she's OK. I sure hope you won't put her through all that again since it's taken so much out of her... IP: Logged |
