I have a 5 year old German Shorthair Pointer, he is a very sweet, smart dog he is also an escape artist. Elwood is not nuetered he have bred him several times but now just want him for a pet. If we neuter him at his age will it have any affect on his bad behavior problems or will he continue escaping, marking his territory and not listening. email-ebjerken33@hotmail.com IP: Logged |

Well, I had my dog fixed at 3 years old and it didn't change a thing in behavior; however, each dog is different...all depends really. I think it would be better to have him fixed simply because he is such a great escape artist...wouldn;t want him to impregnate a chiwawa now....anyhooo....the behavior thing takes about a year for the testosterone to leave the body that old. But well worth it! They heal up real fast and is not a big deal at all...my guy was more upset about the sleepy medicine than anything. Can't resist sharing this with you. When they remove the testicles (not the entire sack just the innerds)my guy was very wobbly on his feet for the first day...must have been a weird feeling with out his manlies....did get used to it tho and some behavioral stuff is getting better, just takes time. Depends on why your dog is escaping.....the 2 main reasons dogs try to escape are 1) bordem and 2)mating instincts. If your dog is running off to look for a mate neutering should help. It may also help with him listening because he wont have other things on his mind. My toy poodle was not neutered until 5yrs of age (by his previous owners)...he has since stopped marking in the house. IP: Logged |

Unfortunately, your dog is basically acting like a stud dog. Neutering may or may not help, because he's learned all these behaviors, and may not even need the hormonal push to act in that way. That's one of the things people sign onto when they decide to breed their male dog. That's not to say he shouldn't be fixed though. Others have mentioned the benefits of having a dog (even older) fixed. Also, the problems you mentioned are mostly behavioral... marking can usually be corrected with training, escaping may be caused by several things, but can be fixed, and not listening is due mostly to training or lack thereof.
