I got my shi-poo today. He is 7 weeks old and only weighs 8oz. He is a big whiner, is this all puppies this small or what? And he seems to stop doing it as much when I pick him up. Should I let him whine some in his box or not?

Yes, you want to ignor bad behavior. Let him cry, he's only missing his sisters/brothers/mother...lots of reason to cry...I know I'd be a mess You don't want to pick him up or pet him nor scold him as all those things re-enforce the behavior. Simply ignor it, this will take time and can get very irritating...just be patient...when the puppy stops you will be glad you did...could last a life time if you don't stop it now.

Anyways, congrats on your new puppy. Make sure there are things for the lil one to chew, not to mention all the basics food/water, but I'm sure your already way ahead here. Maybe put a blanket with your scent on it, will make the lil one more at ease to be close to something he's used to!

Good luck

Thank you for the response. He is so small (8 oz) though that I think I am going to have to get him some cat toys to play with instead of puppy toys. He is the runt and last night I put him in his crate to sleep. I know he cried for about 40mins. I got him out and took him to potty, sure enough he had to pee, but when I put him back up he just cried for a long time. I left him in the crate and ignored it but you were right, it is hard. He naps a whole lot during the day and I take him out to pee after every time when he wakes up, is this correct? I've never had a puppy so small.

I also have another question. I have him at work with me this week, to help potty train him. I have his crate here and I leave it open with one of my old t-shirts in it, but he doesn't seem to go in it. Is it because he's just not use to it yet? I want to make sure I get him potty trained, and I leave him out of the crate all during the day while he's here with me, but next week, I will have to leave him at home by himself. Do I put him in the crate all day. There is no one around to let him out while I'm here at work?

Hi Mexicanbeauty,
It is hard to ignor the crying, but do it for 1 week and then you will notice the crying slowing down or stopping.

You are correct to take the lil one out after he wakes up...that is perfect!

You also want to take out to potty before put in the crate. After feeding or drinking too!

Potty training takes time...so don't expect to have the lil one potty trained in a week..will probably take longer. Also, at that young of an age the bladder hasn't developed enouph yet so your baby won't be able to hold it long...will make accidents even if he doesn't want too.

Good luck

Just wanted to add that I have had my shih-po for a week now. She is 1 pound. I put her in a playpen and she always cried the first couple of days, now she is a lot better. She will cry for a second and then stop. She is also doing great at potty training. I was home all weekend long and she peed outside all weekend and never used her playpen.

I do have some pictures that the lady I got him from took. He doesn't look very small in his pics. but I took him to the vet yesterday and he weighs 1lb and 2ozs. He is so tiny. I appreciate all the good advice, it has really helped out a lot. If you give me your e-mail address, I will send them to you.

I am looking for a Shipoo puppy. I have found some breeders but they are up North and it is too far to drive (and I'm afraid for my puppy to fly so far). Can you tell me where you got your puppy? I see you are from Hickory NC and I live in Winston Salem. Thanks for any help.
