Hi,
We have 4 dogs . But one we are at wits end with. Our male pug. He is turning 1 year on April 28th. He is so hyper , you just can't even imagine. Even the an't neighbors complain about him because he got loose one day. He lives inside but he is so hyer we can't handle him. We took him to obedience training at a local petsmart. He got kicked out . He knows sit, laydown, come, but he doesn't slow down long enough to do them. Any suggestions? Also we can't cut his nails because he won't sit still . our vet refuses unless we have him sedated. He suggested giving him benedryl at home and trying to do it and that didn't phase him one bit. Please helP:::::::::::::::

It is possible that benedryl has the reverse affect on your little guy.you can go to your local pet store and buy something over the counter to help him relax.i use calm-X.

Is calm x safe for all dogs? Pugs are very sensitive dogs to any sedation because of there limited air passages. What was it originally made for? Is there an active ingrediant? I was just wondering so i can check with my vet first. Thanks for your imput. Please answer back soon before I got nutso. LOL

I don't know what the ingrediants are right off hand.I will look tonight when I get home and let you know.It should be ok to give it to your dog...The dosage is based on the weight.I will let you know soon.

Does he have a "job"? Or do you just let him lounge around the house all day, doing as he pleases? Does he have any toys or games he particularly likes? If he doesn't have anything to do, he's going to make up his own "jobs", and they're probably not going to be things you want him to be doing . A "job" can be something as simple as fetching a ball every day for a 1/2 hr. Annie, our mini dachshund used to be so hyper that no one could stand to be around her... I started off playing ball with her for an hour every day, then once we had forged a "working relationship" (in that she learned that making me happy would get her rewards like playing catch, etc), we started working on simple obedience, incorporating it into her play/job. Now she's got good obedience, and she doesn't catapult off of the furniture anymore or run from room to room looking for something to do. We go to a nearby field to play and work on obedience/tracking (just starting the tracking) almost everyday, sometimes for only a 1/2 hr or so, sometimes several hours. They say that mental work will tire out a dog much faster than only physical work, so keep that in mind when you're trying to tire him out

I have been raising pugs for about 6 years now and trust me when i say it will grow out of it. Give the dog 6 more months and you will see a huge differance in it

thanks for all the good advice . Well he is very alpha male and I went back to petsmart and talked to a different trainer and she told me some tips to put us back in control. He had to be put on a chain when he goes out because he wouldn't use the bathroom on a leash. It was like he got mad at me and changed into a man! He would go outside so he started using the bathroom on the floor. Then we crated him and he started going in there and he has never done this. So I started crate/obedience/ and control training all over again. i found it has worked well for me to show him i am the leader of the pack. he has been using the bathroom outside and is getting some non crate time inside now. I can see he is calmer since he knows I am the leader so hopefully like the last post said it will be over in 6 months. I couldn't bare to part with him.thanks again . you guys are great.oh and I forgot to mention we got another puppy and it seems that may have played a part in his disobedience getting worse. We are giving him more one one time and the jealousy is subsiding.

You could try rescue remedy. It is all natural and rescue remedy is a mixture of 5 different flower essences. It either has some effect on dogs or has none at all but it isnt a miracle cure but may help some. You can get it at most health food stores. Also try looking up Bach flower essences for pets you can find sites that tell you exactly what each essence does and you can also make up your own mixtures. I used rescue remedy on my rotty who had a bad case of separation anxiety. It didnt take away all her syptoms but got her anxiety to a point it could be controlled and worked with. Just a thought
