I need help/advice. Our 10 yr Sable German Shepherd won't eat anymore. He has had diarrhea for a few months - regular but cowpattie like, has lost about 20lbs, has had a few mild siezures. He's been drinking water excessivly. Obssivley licks the snow. I know his world has been changed with the birth of my daughter (9 mts). Vet hasn't diagnosed anything yet - not worms, want to do more blood work -$$$ a problem. I think its a kidney or pancreas type problem, however, my main concern right now is for him to eat. I've tried adding cheese, spoon feeding, rice and boiled hamburger, baby food - everything only works once. I'd be greatful for any help, please, he's such a sweet dog.

Sounds to me you havea serious situation that needs medical attention. If your vet has been unable to find anything, why doesn't he reffer you to a gastrologist? I would think the first thing would be to hospitalize this dog, get him on fluids, and do a complete blood panel. If you vet is not trying to do something for him, find another vet.

It could be any number of things, from bad teeth to internal problems (maybe a tumor in his mouth area or somewhere in his digestive tract?). The diabetic dog we have here drinks excessively when her sugar levels get out of the "ok" range, but she also seems to always be hungry when that happens(though I've heard that some owners have trouble getting older diabetics to eat). She also had a problem with her pancreas where it wasn't producing the enzymes needed to digest the fat in her food, and was basically starving to death because all the fat kept coming right back out (she also had runny stool when this happened). The medicine for her diabetes is not too expensive, but not particularly cheap either, and the enzyme replacer pills were pretty cheap at $15 for a bottle of 50 pills. I know that your vet can do a simple test for sugar concentration in the urine to get an idea of whether a dog is diabetic or not, and a stool test showed that she wasn't digesting the fats. Those are probably not it, but it might be worth checking into if you haven't already. If you can't find out what's wrong with him, then you really should consider what the quality of his life is at this point... whether it's worth living or if it would be better for him to be PTS. I'm not saying that's what you should do, but you need to weigh things carefully and decide what's best for everyone involved. Sorry
