I recently adopted a 3 year old Lab from the SPCA, and she is so co-dependant. I don't know what to do because she is getting on everyones nerves in the house. Wherever you go, she is right under your feet, and we can't lock ourselves in the office to get work done because she starts barking and whining. What do I do? Is there anyway to make her more independant? It is bad. She has got to learn to be okay by herself. If we leave the house, then she is annoying my neighbors by barking the whole time we are gone. This seems to be a big problem...a lot of Seperation Anxiety..geesh. Anyways, your dog is just clingy...who knows why really...the trip to the SPCA could have caused it or maybe the previous owner spent 24/7 with the dog? I dunno, But the best and only way to treat the whining is to IGNOR it. This is very difficult at times, I know because my dog whines when he wants attention and will go as far as putting his head on my lap and giving me this look like I'm the coldest person in the world, makes me feel really quilty, but it is very important to ignor the whining. The dog whines because it wants attention...thus if you give good attention OR Bad attention...the dog is still getting attention and is learning that whining gets the dog what it wants. As for the problem with the neighbors...another person said it here before I'll repeat it.....they never make noise? It would probably benefit you to enroll this one in a doggy day care while you are absent or something, but try teaching the dog once it stops whining you will give him attention You also, will want to consult a trainer in your area on this. In regard to her being under everyones feet. You should try giving her a command of "down" and teach her to stay there. Don't let her follow. Training takes a lot of time and patience, but is well worth the effort. Then, when the dog has learned it, you will have the bestest friend you could ask for.
