Hi everyone, I have a 9 week old rott/doberman puppy. Plus, I am a college student. I would like to know how old a puppy has to be when I can leave him along in my apt. with him not being in a crate and is there a procedure for getting him used to being along? I heard that you should leave him along for 5 min. then increase it to 10 min. this way he gets use to it and I could make sure he will not chew my furniture. Is this the best way or should I do something else? Help is much appreaciated!!! IP: Logged |

That progree might work, but it will take a long time probably...In my opinion its not good to leave a puppy that young alone for more than 2 hrs! Do you have any close friends, or family that could watch the little one? If there no other choice, make sure he has plenty of toys, and food + water! And when you get home, play with him alot!!! Sorry that I don't have any other ideas!!!1 IP: Logged |

If you are expecting to house train him, leaving him alone a long time, like more than a few hrs, as the previous person stated and I agree with, just won't work. I think you need to realize he is needy at this age moreso than any other time, as his training of permanent habits has to be learned/taught by you, the primary caregiver. BTW, how is the biting situation you wrote of before?? It seems this pup is a bit much with you being in college and all. Have you considered possibly giving him to a home that perhaps has the time moreso, and perhaps later, you can get another? I don't mean this in a bad way, but he has been a handful for a month at least now, and I would hate to see your studies get affected in a negative way. God bless. IP: Logged |

Hi Candie, I must say I agree with Pauline; however, yes your procedure is correct. You want to start with the least amount of time and slowly increase the time away. Have you tried leaving the pup in the washroom with the crate open so the pup can have a place to pee and poo also an area to play and then he could go to his crate for sleepies. The best of luck IP: Logged |
