Hi, I have a serious problem that I need serious help with. I have a 6 month old pekinese/shitsu cross and he has come to us from the pet store with a horrible, nasty habit that I cannot seem to get rid of no matter who I speak to about it, vet, pet store etc... It is beginning to worry me because it seems to be a trauma and it gets him sick when he does it. He cannot see his own feses in front of him, if we do not immediately get rid of it, he will do it himself in the only way he knows how, he eats it...he is still going to the bathroom in the house on his newspapers, we have not started doing the outside thing yet. He came to us with this problem from the pet store where it all started and where he was surrounded constantly in it, that may have caused the trauma, he cannot see it and we are obviously not always there watching him to clean it but we dont want him to eat it...it is a huge headache and I worry about him so much...Please I need help, if any knows how to get rid of a habit such as that, help me!!!!!!!!We have tried all we can!!! Thank you

Is that the only problem? Is he acting strangely? I suggest to go to the vet and have a checkup/ exam done, to see if something is wrong... I hope he is better sooooooooooooon!

you can go to your local pet superstore and purchase products which you sprinkle on the food.. they are tasteless to the dogs when they are eating their chow but when they go to eat their feces they are deterred by the taste.. they are safe products and are supposed to stop the dog from eating their feces.. i myself do not have this problem and therefore have not tried any of the products or i'd give you a name of one that works.. but they are a in a powder form and are sprinkled on the food during mealtime.. i'm sure you can ask for help, locating the product, from a knowledgeable employee at your nearest pet superstore.. i hope this helps

Bellasmom has some good points. I have heard that puppies will copy their moms actions of cleaning up the poop around her babies. Also older dogs do it sometimes because the poop still has traces of undigested food and it still smells good to them so they chomp.
