There are so many great foods on the market, but which one is best?!! Trust me here guys!! First of all food like Eukanuba are greasy and have a lot of fat! BilJac is an excellent choice. Dogs are carnivores and they prefer MEAT of course! But veggies can be an important additive as well. Many even "cheaper" dog foods now include them in the "mix". MOST EVERY professional dog breeder will agree that "table scraps" in moderation is NOT that bad either. If you have just one or two you can "prepare" meals for your children (like I do!). I can tell you that a dog can get spoiled for sure (personally I don't mind though!). Be sure to remember that what goes in DRY usually comes out dry, but suppliment those kibbles with some REAL meat or even veggies can add to growth and health! So many commercial foods are mostly "filler" like corn or rice. Give the dog the MEAT and he will thank you for it!!

Bil-jac select:
Ingredients
Chicken by-products (organ meat only), chicken, corn, chicken by-product meal, dried beet pulp, chicken liver, brewers dried yeast, cane molasses, eggs, salt, sodium propionate (a preservative), dl-methionine, l-lysine, vitamin A acetate, vitamin D3 supplement, vitamin E supplement, riboflavin supplement, niacin, biotin, choline chloride, folic acid, thiamine mononitrate, pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6), ascorbic acid (vitamin C), vitamin B12 supplement, d-calcium pantothenate, manganous oxide, inositol, BHA (a preservative), ferrous sulfate, copper sulfate, zinc oxide, cobalt carbonate, potassium iodide, sodium selenite.

Guaranteed Analysis
Crude protein (min.) 27%, crude fat (min.) 18%, crude fiber (max.) 4%, moisture (max.) 10%.

The Bil-jac, well, I wouldn't feed it. It's not awful or anything, but for the price you could sure get something better. It has too many by-products for my liking, and I avoid corn.

Some good brands
Eagle,,Natural Balance,,Solid Gold,, just to name a few.

I use the Petsmart brand for large dogs, mostly chicken, add corn oil, and buy vegggies in cans to supplement. I too believe in adding occasional stuff like good table scraps, gravies, and buy beef bones at the supermarket as well as rawhide chews. Limit the beef bones though as the calcium hosphorus ratio can get really screwed up and good bone health is jeopardized.
Yrs ago I believed in Pedigree, but found hard wire-like projections/hairs in it too many times to suit my fancy. Animal feeds are not regulated by and large, so we have to be the fussy ones. There also can be junk in it NOT on the label from what I understand, this continues to bother me. All we can do is the best, eh?! God bless.

Dane lover!! I have to step down to you here! I had not actually analyzed the content of BilJac at all. I simply took other breeders word on the product!! I knew that it contained "real meat" and after all was kept in the refrigerated section of our grocery mart so it must simply be "better" right? Apparently NOT. When I first started searching for the perfect pet diet I was actually initially shocked to find out that so many even show breeders gave their dogs "scraps" for supliment. You can bet that if I make a pot roast my "kids" get a large helping! "Mamie" by 6lb 2yr female however has learned that if she waits long enough she can have roast turkey and beef or ham steak and now refuses to eat anything at all that even has the word "dog" on it!!

Truly you have to be careful not to spoil them too much, but then Mamie is my baby! LOL hahahaha

Yeah. I stand by my Solid Gold. All natural, sealed airtight and good for 1 month after opening. Great for dogs that are sensitive to stuff!
