Got a question for those who have owned may dogs. As most know I rescued a rottie about a month and a half ago. She was supposedly in heat when I got her so I couldnt get her fixed right away. She then started dog obedience classes and she has a 7 mo old pit bull there who is her buddy and they carry on after class together so I figured I would wait till her classes were over because it was only 8 weeks. Well she started bleeding today so I took her to the vet and she said she was definitely in heat. She doesnt remember her exactly when I brought her in the first time so she says it might have been a tract infection. But she bled from there she totally acted like she was in heat and it lasted like 2 weeks. She said it is very rare for a dog like this to go into heat more than twice a year. Has anyone ever heard of this or have any idea what it could have been the first time. I am totally baffled. Her classes are done in alittle over 2 weeks so I am still going to get her fixed as planned but this is crazy. I never heard of this. I thought I wouldnt have to deal with her in heat again. I cany imagine this being healthy for her. Any ideas? IP: Logged |

I don't have any answers for you, but do know that Duke's mom goes into heat more than twice a year. She will get her period like 4 times a year maybe there is something wrong with her too or maybe it is just the way it is? Her period will last about 1 month. Its so awful...I would have to get my female fixed too..I wouldn't be able to handle it! lol IP: Logged |

Some dogs will go into heat again if there's another female in heat living with them, or even nearby. I'm not sure why they do that, but it can happen. IP: Logged |

So it can be normal for her to go into heat within a 2 month period? My other dog is fixed so she doesnt have that problem. So it is normal? This isnt something to worry about? I wont have to worry about it anymore after this time but Im just worried about her now. The vet said that as long as she is eating and drinking as normal there isnt anything to worry about but I just wanted to talk to you guys because I never heard of this. I never heard of dogs going into heat this close together? So this isnt uncommon, right? I dont have anything to worry about? IP: Logged |

Ok Im not gonna worry anymore now that I know she is ok. I have another question though. How do you keep from having blood all over your house? I thought about the doggie diapers but I cant see her leaving them on. She is bleeding more than she did last time. Any suggestions. IP: Logged |

they make these little shorts type things to go over the diapers. They have straps that go under the chest and down the back,so it hold then in place.that way she can't get them off.other than that i have know idea. IP: Logged |

What we do for Pepper is use a pair of mans bikini breefs and put a womans pad in there. Then we tie it up with an elastic so it's fits firmly around her belly...not too tight though, just right. She pulls it off at night, but when the people she loves are there...it's works well and it's cheaper than the doggie diapers. Good luck Hey Goob.....women that are fairly close ie: live together, also get there periods at the same time each month.....it's like body sincronizing (probably spelt wrong..duh) [This message has been edited by shmoopie (edited 03-05-2003).] IP: Logged |

Thank you everyone for your advice. All I got to say is thank god my vet has emergency hours. I would go nuts wondering if she is ok or not. I talked to her dog trainer and she said she was definitely in heat when she first started class and definitely is now. Its kinda funny I took her to class tonight and she made an announcement that abby was in heat and asked if there were any unneutered males which there was one. So she just told them to stay away from abby. But i felt like I wasnt taking care of her cuz she wasnt fixed. Oh well I know I am and she is getting fixed in 2 weeks. Yeahhh. She also has to get eye surgery while she is under. Boo hoo I hope she does alright. I forget what its called but she has that thing where her eye lid goes back on her eye and rubs against her eye. Any how I just wanted to say thanks. I was really worried about her but you guys relaxed me and reassured me as usual. I just never heard of it before and it even freaked my dog trainer out. Before i told her I had already taken her to the vet. She said to me take that dog to the vet a.s.a.p then i told her i already did which relaxed her. But she got worried when I called her to ask her if it was ok to bring abby. I kind of felt a little better hearing somewhat of an expert freak out a little. I felt normal again. Sorry I keep rambling. Thanks alot guys. I always know you are here when I need you and I will kepp you posted on Abby IP: Logged |
