Hi. I have a 10 weeks old yorkie puppy(1.5lbs). I got him at 8 weeks old...and I went to a vet close to my place. Even though Toto finiched his 2nd shot of Durammune Max 5 at 6 weeks old, the vet ignored it and gave him the first puppy shot of DHLPP. The day he got a shot and a day after, he seemed very tired and trembled from time to time. I was worried but now, he seems perfectly OK. Later I read someting about Lepto on the net, and found out that for this kind of small breed,,,,,usually vet doesn't include Lepto till 6months old. is that right? His 2nd shot is coming in 2 weeks, so I'll ask about it to my vet. But at the same time, can anybody give me some information about the puppy shot for small breed? Also, if there are yorkie owners in DFW area, I want to know which vet they bring their yorkie to. ( I live in Irving, Tx). I heard one yorkie died after 2nd puppy shot with Lepto.... IP: Logged |

I have a 12 week old puppy, a Catahoula Leopard, so not a small breed, but I asked my vet why it wasn't included. He said they no longer give the Lepto because so many dogs actually contract it, it wasn't worth giving it. He said they do give it to dogs who continually have problems, repeatedly having the runs etc. I also have a two year old Aussie mix, I take him on trail rides with me alot, so he is exposed to puddle water, creeks etc... my vet said he was probably already exposed in this way several times and has built up his own immunity. Thats just what my vet said...and I am repeating it, lol so no gaurantee I said it word for word. Smiles on you and your puppy. IP: Logged |

Toto: mom, This is my opionion on lepto I have been around dogs for 30 years, from working breed to toys. With toys such as yorkies or any toy for that matter it seemed to cause (lepto) alot of problems and death among the little ones. In my own program of shots I never took the chance and did not give lepto to any of them..But everyone has to make that decision themselves for their own pets. Good Luck Doc~2003 IP: Logged |

I know this is an old post, but I just came across it. I used to live in Irving and moved last year. I don't know if you found a vet that you like or not yet, but I have a few suggestions. My favorite place I found was the Humane Society of the United States, they have a vet clinic. The vets there are terrific. I took care of a lot of strays and they helped me out a lot. They are actually in Dallas over near 35, but it wasn't too far from where I lived on Shady Grove. I also went to a great clinic in Irving at the corner of MacArthur and Northgate. I would have to look in a phone book to remember the name. The third place I went was in Flower Mound. It was near my work, so it was convenient sometimes. They helped me out with an orphaned kitten. Actually the Vetsmart on 183 in Irving is pretty good too. I saw Dr. Bass there. They like to run some tests that I consider unnecessary though, so it cost a little more. If you want any more info on any of these, just let me know. IP: Logged |
