MY SEVEN MONTH OLD PEEKAPOO WAS SPAYED TODAY AND SHE SEEMS VERY SORE. SHE HAD HER SHARE OF PAIN KILLERS FOR TODAY BUT STILL WALKS SLOWLY AND IS ACTING STRANGE. SHE WALKS IN CIRCLES AND JUST DOES NOT SEEM TO KNOW WHAT SHE WANTS. SHE IS ALSO LICKING HER SORE WHICH THE VET SAID TO NOT LET HER DO. HOW CAN I PREVENT THIS? THEY RECCOMMENDED TOBASCO SAUCE NEAR THE WOUND BUT NOT DIRECTLY ON IT. OUCH, I THINK NOT
HELP, NEW PUPPY MOM VERY NERVOUS

My vet of several yrs back who did my dobies' ears, gave AcePromazine to calm, help with pain. I liked this idea, and I liked the vet for her approach as they feel pain too.
I think your dog acts as though she is disoriented and in pain still, and confused about her body change. If you are uncomfortable about tobasco sauce, go to Walmart or petstore, and get some "Bitter Apple" stuff or just use an elizabethan collar to prevent her from messing with booboo. I's keep an eye on her as far as her circular walking goes. And call vet pronto if she is still doing this after a day or 2 of the surgery, really.I hope she recovers soon, I know you'd sure feel better too. God bless.

i got my shih-poo spayed 3 weeks ago.. for the first 24 hours she felt very ill and didn't move much at all.. wandering in circle trying to find a comfortable spot/position.. it took her three days before she really took any interest in food and four days before she even ate more than a couple of bites..
within a week i could see her feeling a lot better and becoming more active.. within two weeks she was almost completely back to herself and now she's definitely back..
my puppy also licked the surgical site and i would rub around the site for her and push her head away from it.. they lick it because it itches while healing so by rubbing around it i was able to safely itch the area.. i hope this helps.. if you have any gut feeling or serious concerns follow your heart/gut and get your puppy to a vet.. mom's know best!

Just an idea...I used a neck brace that I had from when I was in a car accident, it's soft, less of a pain than the elizabethian collar, and prevented her from getting to the incision. She could still get to her food and water, and sleeping was much more comfortable for her. They are about the same price as the collars you get at the vet, I just liked the neck brace better. Smiles and good luck with your pup.
