I recently rescued a 2 1/2 year old Yorkie. He was not well kept, (he was kept outdoors), but seems to be a happy and sweet dog. The problem we seem to have with him, is that he likes to use different rooms of our house to go potty. I crate him at night, take him outside in the morning to do his "business", but doesn't do anything more than look at me, as if saying, "So what now?" I take him back inside,(after about 15 minutes), feed him, and at some time when we're not looking he finds a spot in the house to go potty! I have also tryed to feed him and wait for about 20 minutes before we go ouside, but the result is still the same! How often does a small dog go potty? I need help before I lose my mind!!!!

I would tackle it as if he were a puppy. When I potty train, and I know not everyone can do this...but I take my pup out about every twenty minutes, I always say "go potty" in a positive tone, I will walk outside with him until he goes, this usually takes only a few minutes with a pup. I make a huge deal of it when he does go, WHILE he is going. When we come in he gets a treat, you may want to pocket the treat and give it immediately after wards. Take him out immediately when he wakes up from a nap, after playing, after eating and drinking. Ok this last part will seem gross..but when he does go in the house, pick it up and take it outside to the spot you want him to go and leave it there. He will soon associate that spot with his potty spot. Also, when you catch him in the act...pick him up and run for the door, even if it's midstream, then wait outside till he goes there. (yes it may take a while) One last hint, make sure his kennel or crate is small enough that he can't go in one half and sleep in the other half. Then when you let him out he will have to go. They generally won't go where they have to sleep, but if they can divide it because it's large they sometimes will. Consistency, patience and a TON of praise when he goes in the right place. Maybe put a weekend aside where you are comitted to really paying attention to just this goal, so he really gets the idea. Good luck!

I used to tell my dog to squat your butt. She got so that she wouldn't go until you said the magic words. My husband would take her out and come back and tell me she wouldn't go until I told him the magic words.

Hi, I was going to say what Maisey said, take some of his droppings out to a place where you want to designate it potty place. Also, I chat alot with yorkie owners on another forum and they say that they also buy those piddle pads and get them to piddle on them. Just in case they don't get home in a decent amount of time, the dog will learn that it is an ok spot. They say being that they are such tiny dogs they need to go more often. hope I could help some.
