Hi, Your puppy needs be taught to Sit andStay, ie Obedience training. If you don'tknow how to do it get books out the library, or search the web looking for Dog Training or best of all go to Puppy School. You're right, she needs to learn good manners, and what is cute now would be unacceptable when grown. Good training these days is based on Command and reward. You firmly tell your dog what to do or not do and when it responds you praise it withGood Doggy and lots of pats and maybe a treat. But ideally the owner needs to learn how to give the commands. Have fun.

Brandi try training with a squirt gun...You'll be suprised how well a little blast of water corrects such behavior...It's effective and harmless to the pooch....

I personally don't like squirting in the face off hand before any other method cause it may cause adverse facial behavior, fear of washing face in the future, etc. I don't know everything, but have had dogs that jumped. I used a firm "NO" and held out my knee which prevented the dog from reaching up. Your knee blocks his chest/face. Each time, no lapses, and everyone was to do the same for consistency in training. It didn't take long. The whole objective of training is to be rid of adverse behavior but not to create another.
And you can also use a long training lead, have another stand by, and when pup tries to jump on that other person, yank back with a firm "NO", and "sit". It works, but repetition is key. Good luck.

Hi Brandi,

I have been a trainer for quite a few years and I have found one thing that seems to work the best so I hope this helps. When she jumps on you hold her front feet for a few seconds then release. This teaches her that jumping equals being uncomfortable and dogs don't like that. But do make sure you touch her feet in normal possitive ways as well, you do not want this to be the only foot contact. Using the knee helps some dogs but others just see it as an obstical to jump higher to get around it. And squirt guns are affective only if used properly. And plus you always need to have it on stand by which can be a pain. Hope this helps.

hey,
I raise and train pitbulls.I have been doing this for a long time.Every dog is different and responds to everything different. The advise above is really good.I would start with one way and if it doesn't work go to the next thing.I use them all depending on the dog. Some thing I do for my most hard headed dogs are,I got to my local hardware store and buy 3 feet of heavy chain..not to heavy..but heavy enough for what ever size dog I am working with.I make a collar from the chain, and then I have 2 peices of the chain cut into 1 foot length.I contect them to the bottom of the collar. When the dog jumps it will smack them in the check. After a few times of this they do not jump up on you any more.

Not to over simplify...I agree that every dog is different, but how about teaching her what you DO want her to do instead. It's easy to say "no", but you aren't telling her what you want her to do instead. Have her sit, show her that you want her to sit nicely in order to greet you at the door for instance. Lots of praise when she does do the right thing. Smiles and good luck

Hi all,

Good advice. But yes, all dogs are different and some methods work better than others on certain type dogs.

Try ignoring the dog whenever it jumps up on you. Give it the silent treatment for 2 minutes.

I wouldn't use a squirt gun. It could cause a complex in the dog. It could promote a dog to attack anyone using a squirt gun, which are usually kids. "I say no to squirt gun"

Sticking your knee out into the head/cheast of the pup also works very well. DOn't do it aggressively, just do it as if it was a natural response to it jumping up on you. Stick the knee out and just be normal, not mad, not nice, just stick it out like it belongs there when the pup jumps up. I used to knee pretty hard, but I have large dogs, I would say "OOOOPS!" I would ignore them after that. Honestly, I like the knee. I knee other peoples dogs too. If they cannot control their dog and it jumps on me, I knee it.

I don't knee it like I was in a fight, I just stick out my knee. LOL

They look at me funny sometimes. But the way I see it, Im not doing anything wrong.

Russ

My dogs have never jumped on anyone since their early puppy days.

I agree with Russ on this one..I use the knee method on my dogs.I have also had to use a my chain method. They both work really well.

I don't know, but I always heard that with larger breed dogs, when they constantly jump up on everyone, you should just raise your knee up, so he will hit the knee, and at same time, firmly repeat, NO..DOWN, or DOWN, BAD, something to that effect.

Your aren't hurting the dog, just keeping him at bay, so he/she is unable to jump onto your body, etc... except for the knee.

They say it works, so you might give it a whirl.

I would start by turning away right when she jumps up, you might even turn and walk away. Then teach her 'sit' and 'stay' and that these are the desired behaviors which will get her reward. Never reward the jumping. Puppies natually want to be up near your face, that is their way of greeting. You might even squat down and put her in a sit.

This is easy to break...Simply step on her back foot when she jumps up and tell the dog NO! DOWN! and after a few times the dog will think before jumping...This is the only method I have ever had to use and it does not cause your dog to shy away from you like the dog would do if you are trying to teach her by going at her face...I hope this helps you...Also CONSISTANCY! Dont let the dog jump up on anyone or anything...
