"I was so excited to find a place to ask my questions and I am sure I will have many as time goes by. I've recently gotten my first ever APBT and I am in love. I got him very young (22 days old). My little Eli is now 6 weeks old and adorable as ever but he wants to bite at everyone's faces and anything esle they get close to his mouth!! My question is; What is the best way to go about training him to not bite faces, arms, legs, ears, etc... Thanks for your time and thoughts. " IP: Logged |

Hi, Your little pup sounds gorgeous but he is very very young so don't expect too much for several weeks. However it's not too early to start gently training him. Each time he 'mouths' at people, put your hand over his mouth and say firmly NO and frown. Then immediately give him his own chew toy so heknows he can bite that. An old sock tied in a knot is fine for one so young. Don't forget he needs something to chew on, so let him know what he can, and what he can't. Being so young he'll still 'bite' at people for a while, but in time, with persistence, he will learn. Have fun. IP: Logged |

You did get your pup at quite a young age, the mother did not have enough time to train the pup basic manners lol. Most of the time pups should not be given away till 8 weeks old. So it is up to you to teach the pup what is acceptable and what is not. With a pitbull you must be firm and consistent . Always reward the proper behaviour with love and praise. Never reward bad behaviour. Make sure even if its playing and its so cute, to not reward what is not acceptable, like jumping up on you or biting face, fingers or feet etc. A firm "NO!" or "BAD" or "GRRRRRR" is usually enough, plus ignore him for a bit. Don't continue to play or pat him when he does a no no. I imagine if hes biting faces etc. he must be picked up or you must be on the ground. So put him down immediately and give him the silent/ignore treatment. He is still very young so you don't want to give him a complex. Just be patient. He has alot to catch up on because he was taken away from mommy at such an early age.
