You dont need to rub his nose in it - correcting behavior after the fact will only confuse him. Instead wipe up the urine with a paper towel and bring the puppy and the paper towel outside - let him smell the urine soaked paper towel and set it on the ground outside and tell him to "go pee". Follow him everywhere when he is out of his crate...if you see him start to squat or circle or sniff alot (as if he is going to go to the bathroom) then say "gotta go outside?" and take him outside. Tell him to "go pee" and always stay outside with him until he pees and when he does praise him for going - maybe even give him a little treat. You must be consistant so that he gets the idea that he is supposed to go to the bathroom outside. For me, using phrases before taking her outside like "gotta go outside?" and telling her "go pee" once I got outside was very helpful. She is now over 2yrs old and seems to understand what these phrases mean. It only took me 2 months to fully house train her. I was very consistant, constantly kept my eye on her at all times while she had free access to the entire house and praised her for doing what I wanted her to do. I never rubbed her nose in it and didnt use a crate. If I caught her in the act of going in the house - I made a loud noise in a deep voice and rushed her outside. She picked up really quickly this way. I never crate trained so I cant help you with that part...Im sure someone else will have some tips for you.

Hi Princess,

With crate training, you must be consistent. You can't give in to the whining. It's tuff but well worth it. Some dogs don't seem to mind but 2 out of my four really hated it and it's so hard to ignore a cute little puppy who is crying and trying his best to make you feel bad to come and get him LOL. Thor and Loki were not crate trained, like you said, I think pits are naturals LOL

I agree with Nern, try to time when the dog will have to go pee, like 10-30 mins after a feeding or so. Say "Go pee????" Then take him outside for a walk or just hang out with him in the yard till he pees, upon flow of pee, PRAISE like crazy and make him feel he is the smartest dog in the world. He should catch on that this makes you very happy and that he should continue to repeat this process.

Like Nern said, rubbing his nose in it or giving him crap after the fact is not good for the pee training or any type of training. The dog can't remember and it doesn't know what it did wrong, it's like; mom comes home, opens the door and instead of a "HI PUPPY!!!" it's ARGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!!!! Bad dog, have some poo in your face.
They can't connect the booboo with the punishment.Especially if they did it 30 mins or 2 hours ago.

Soon they will start to fear you coming home.=(

Try feeding him in a fenced/blocked off area in the kitchen. Leave him there after he finishes. Wait 10-15 mins and take him outside, after he pees, Praise, and then take him back in and let him come with you to the livingroom or wherever to snuggle or play.

If you need info on crate training, just holler,

Russ
