Here again, I was at one of the leading pet stores the other evening and was talking to the manager. Asked her about bones and she suggest instead of buying a processed kind that I could purchase a beef bone from the market and bake it at 350 degrees for 1 hour. Has anyone done this and how do you all feel about it. thanks, New Dog Owner M. (Sasha 7 months who loves to chew on her nylabone and rope thingy) IP: Logged |

Bake or boil is fine, just make sure there are no chips on the bone that could crack off and get stuck in doggys throat. Don't give rawhide, it's a dog killer. IP: Logged |

I think Russ meant to make sure there were no parts on the boiled or baked bones that could chip off, Right Russ. I though, have heard rawhide is not good for the dogs. I do give my two rawhide bones in which they love, but there is a women down the street from me that said she knew someone whose dog had swallowed to big of a piece and had gotten it lodged right in his anal area and had to have the vet remove it. I know it sounds rediculous but true. The rawhyde is not digestable. I try to make sure that I take it away when it gets to small or small enough to cause problems. I know you all don't know me, I am from California, lived here all my life. Just thought I would add my two cents. Hope its worth something. IP: Logged |

Rawhide swells when it is moistened. It can and has gotten stuck in the back top part of dogs mouths, then slides down the throat slowly. they choke and suffocate when it hits the part where tubes for stomach and lungs seperate. I peeled it out of my GSD's mouth many years ago. Had to shove my hand right past the Jaws to get my fingers in deep enough to grab it with 2 fingers. It is quite common, so it is not just me who this has happened to. It's the rawhide pieces that are large and flat, not the small pieces that are pressed into sticks. Please becareful when giving to your pet. IP: Logged |

With any bones/chews - you should only give them under supervision. A dog can choke on anything that breaks into smaller peices upon chewing including rawhide, smoked bones or raw bones. Cooked bones are more likely to splinter and break than raw bones. IP: Logged |

so from russ's post its ok if the rawhides are in the twisted sticks, or the knots? i have a little maltipoo & i give her knots & sticks all the time and she loves them, i never knew or never thought about them breaking off! i give them to her when i have to leave her for a while to kind of make up for it so she is alone too. i had heard of pigs ears being bad (as well as disgusting i think) but never gave the rawhide chewies a thought. what is a Nylabone sunshine? are they as appealing to the dogs & stay in one piece? jam, we had read about and inquired about the "Nylabone" which trainers and breeders recommend. My dog just loves hers. When she was a little pup she had the one that had little bumps all over it. Satisfied her chewing needs. Then we needed to move onto the next one and for her size. Different sizes for different dogs. I wouldn't go to small. Get your money's worth. You can check it out on their website nylabone.com. It is made from durable pure virgin nylon designed to satisfy their chewing instincts. Another type of their bones helps to remove plaque buildup on teeth and gumlines. My dog goes to town on hers. VERY APPEALING. So far so good. As always, we always check all her toys/chews. She holds it, carries and chews for hours. They have flavor enhanced ones but I didn't want to start her off with that. Well worth the $9.00 and you can get these at any major pet stores. I wouldn't settle on any other brand but Nylabone. Hope this helps IP: Logged |

My dogs love the piggy ears, though we did have one problem once. You know how they kind of curl at one side. Well my terrier somehow got it stuck in his mouth. It took me awhile to get it out. It finally popped off, all the while Rufus was crying. I had visions of me rushing to the vet with Rufus and a attached piggy ear. When I give them to him them now, he of course only gets half , but I cut into the curled part so's not to have it so stiff. No more problems. IP: Logged |
