I recently took my 10 month old female dog to be checked if she had been de-sexed. I was fairly sure that she had been however was just in need of some advice as there was a slight amount of fluid coming from her vaginal area.
I was unable to see a vet, even though I had made an appointment. It was suggested that I leave her there for observation, so I did. After trying to contact them all-day to find out what the vet had determined from observing her. I was finally able to talk to a vet nurse who could only tell me that my dog was currently in surgery. The vet had cut her open to check if she was de-sexed, I was horrified that I was not consulted before these extreme measures were taken. She was already de-sexed and now has a severe wound across her body? Do you think this was entirely necessary? I was sure that I would be consulted or simply told what to look for that may indicate that a dog is in heat?
Your advice would be most appreciated
thanks

MY god, a simple exray or ultra sound would have shown them if she was spayed or not! I am HORRIFIED by their treatment, you have grounds for a lawsuit here, do NOT pay the bill for the operation, since you did not agree to it or request it, you do NOT have to pay for it and they should PAY YOU for emotional distress and the suffering of the poor dog!

Horrifying story, the vet in question should have his certificate revoked.
You have absolute grounds for a law suit and you should DEFINITELY NOT pay a cent
for their treatment. Maybe you should also post the vet name and location for everyone else here to be aware of.

Amazing ! my heart goes for the dog. Hope she gets better soon.

I hope you do not let him get away with this, horrified I am but you need to bring this man to justice. Chances are he does this on a regular basic (prob to put a few more steaks on his table)..In my opinion this is what I would do
1st.File a complaint (formal written) certified to (State) you live in to the State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners.
2nd.File a Small Claims suit against him. Usually there is a limit in most states of $5000.00. I would file for the full amount even though the bill prob was much smaller. When you file the complaint you add punitive damages which means when you bring this before the magistrate and present your case you can receive the difference between the amount of bill and the difference if you can prove that there was fraud but its been done many times. In this case all you need to prove is that he misrepresented you by FRAUDING you into leaving the animal to give him time to do a surgery WITHOUT CONSENT. If you signed a paper that you left him there does not mean that you AGREED to any procedure other than to look at the dog. At most maybe a physical that would be all, and maybe claim a office visit..as far as any charges. I truely believe you would win this case in court, and if I were you I would want to be the one he would remember!!!!! Even if you don't win, think of it this way, you might be saving another dog from this experience because he has to take time out of his day to GO TO COURT.
Keep us informed
