I have a 9 month old Shih Tzu Cross male and recently he has started snapping and growling (but only sometimes)at my 11 month old nephew. He has always been good with children aside from occasional barking, and I know that my nephew did nothing to provoke this because he is never alone with him. Do you know why he might be doing this? First off, animals can't talk as we do, so they convey anger/impatience/tiredness/illness/wanting to be left alone; by way of growling, snapping, not paying attention and just staying put, or getting up and leaving. If the dog isn't neutered yet, I would do so, as it just may help in the emotional dept, but is not always a true happening. Not all animals change to better when neutered or spayed, except that the vast majority don't jump at a sexual opportunity. This growling against the child indicates perhaps that he doesn't want to be bothered by this child and is to be watched judiciously for fear of a bite/maul, which can occur irregardless of a dog's breed. If this occurred again, I would put a muzzle on the dog after a big fat "NO" was said or put him in a kennel or room as a training tool. The dog is young enough to train in controlling it's behavior, but let's face it, the dog has already indicated to you by it's personality that he doesn't tolerate this child yet. Respect is crucial on both sides. Don't lose hope though, cause he could have been having a bad day too!! Best wishes. IP: Logged |
