Mouthing/play biting in puppies is a normal behavior, but it is a behavior than needs to be stopped. Do not encourage play with your puppies using unprotected hands. Also do not use physical punishment to attempt to stop the biting. Puppies who mouth and bite are seeking attention and need to be taught more appropriate attention seeking behavior. Here are some suggestions: 1. Maintain a regular interaction schedule/playtime. 2. It biting starts, say "no" and walk away. Redirect the activity with appropriate toys. 3. If behavior persists, startle the dog with spray from a water bottle, a can filled with coins (to make a loud noise), or try a squirt of lemon juice from a squeeze lemon into the dogs mouth. 4. Reward the dog whenever he/she is quiet calm 5. Reinforce SIT and STAY for anything the puppy wants. Make them work for their treats! At this point you should have already seen the vet for vaccines, stool check and heartworm prevention (if necessary in your area). Good luck. IP: Logged |
