I have a german shepherd and I really love him, but he consistently barks at around 5 am. I think it is a car with a loud low frequency exhaust that starts up at this time of the morning. I usually have to get out of bed and give him a smack which I hate doing but it is the only thing that quietens him down. I can't really leave him inside, he is huge and longhair as well. He also is terrified of thunder and lightening and barks then also. My neighbours must hate me!! I am not getting proper sleep, and I really need advice please.

For the barking try throwing a can filled with about ten pennies by him. It'll suprise him and then have treats ready to praise, praise, praise when he shuts up.

For thunderstorms try a tranquilizer from the vet.

One thing I found that works is a well insulated dog house (my GSD mix also lives outside) and a good run before the thunder starts.

Barking is something all GSD owners have to deal with.
