My son was recently bitten by a golden cocker spaniel. I have heard that they sometimes suffer from 'cocker rage'. What is it? and what can be expected if the dog has it? IP: Logged |

Cocker Rage is a disorder that Spaniels rarely, but sometimes have. My Cocker Spaniel has Cocker Rage, but 95% of the time, he is the most mellow best friend that you could have. However, occasionally when provoked (and 99% of the time it is only after being provoked) will he snap at you. A symptom of Cocker Rage is when a Spaniels eyes glaze over red for several seconds, much like the "red-eye" seen in photographs. However, I do want to stress that this is not their tempermant, but something being produced by a disorder. IP: Logged |

I think that this is not only cockers, there is an actual disorder or disease in which the dogs eyes glaze over, and will attack anyone or anything-very aggresivly. And after a period of time, the dog's eyes will return to normal, and it will behave as though nothing has happened. Im sorry, I forgot the name of it but I think it was something rage. Anyway I don't know if anyone knows what I'm talking about but, I just add that this rage syndrom can happen to anydog! Its very sad actually. bc IP: Logged |

Rage Syndrome is a very very difficult disorder to pin down, as evidenced by the article that can be found at this link: http://www.essfta.org/aggression.htm I used google to find this article, and the information documented sounds more well-though-out than the other things I read. As to the eyes "changing color;" the dog's pupils may dilate during an aggressive display, but there is no way for the actual irises themselves to actually turn a different color. Pupil dilation can and does happen when a dog is stressed. Dilation can also occur during an epileptic seizure, which some have hypothesized as being the real explanation for genuine rage syndrome. Valkyrie, you say that your dog reacts aggressively after being provoked? Rage syndrome only applies to aggression that is unprovoked and unpredictable. If your dog bites after being provoked to bite, then it's most likely not rage syndrome. It's an extremely rare condition, and most problems that are diagnosed as being due to "rage syndrome" are not rage syndrome at all, but one of several forms of provoked aggressive behavior.
