Hello all! I have not posted in a while, but I have popped in here and there and read posts.

I dropped my Precious off this morning to be spayed and have the chip inserted. My Veterinarian keeps his patients over night for observation so I don't get her back until tomorrow. I can't wait! I am a bit concerned because I don't know what to expect. My cocker was already spayed when I got her.

Does anyone have any advise or experience to share with me?

I am feeling a bit uneasy. I have a girlfriend who has a 4 year old Maltese. She has not had her baby spayed because she said that she does not want to take the chance that it will change her personality. Is there any truth to this? Not that I can do anything about it now or that it would have changed my decision, but I would like to get some feedback on some of your experiences.

Hi Sunday~

Awwww, she is just too cute for words!!! My two little pups love to have their bellies scratched too...it's just too funny.

About the spaying of your little girl, no it will not change her temperament. This was a concern of mine when I had Mickey & Tigger neutered, but I was assured by several veterinarians and other professionals that no personality change would occur as a result of the surgery. They said if anything, their temperament/personality would improve.

The only thing that may change is that she may be a little quieter...no big deal. (And NO, she will not get fat and lazy...which is something I hear a lot!)

The advantages of spaying (or neutering, whatever the case) are significantly great! Spayed females often live longer, are healthier (their risk of developing certain cancers dramatically decreases), they are less inclined to roam and fight, sometimes their affection level increases (although, she is probably as sweet as could be already), most become less aggressive (if they are aggressive to begin with), etc.

Basically speaking, you'll be VERY happy you did and so will she (once she recovers, that is)...you definitely did her a favor!

Hope this helped to ease some of your nerves!

I forgot to mention something in my previous post. My pups were neutered earlier this year, and I have noticed absolutely NO temperament/personality changes. They only thing that has changed since their surgery is fact that they no longer exhibit sexual behaviors (i.e. humping) like they were prior to their surgery. Such a change was gladly welcomed by me!

Nope...it will not change their personality. The only changes that are likely to occur are behavioral and these changes would benefit the owner as they are usually unwanted behaviors such as humping, marking, ect.
Sebastian was not neutered until he was 5yrs old...his personality did not change one bit but his humping and marking in the house decreased significantly.

Ok Gang, I need your replies on this:

Precious is home! I picked her up this morning at 9. Call me an anxious/over protective mom, but I am worried about her. She is not herself.. (expectedly so) But it seems a little to docile to me. She shows no interest in any of the things that usually excite her and she has not eaten all day . Is this normal? She is usually a very feisty and playful little girl. Grooming is even a game. I gave her a light brushing today and she just let me. Her favorite thing to do is terrorize the cat. It's usually a mad dash to catch her as she goes barking, jumping and chasing him. Today, the cat even plopped down in the same room with her and took a nap as soon as he discovered she wasn't going to go after him. That is just not normal around here! Should I be worried?

THANKS!

Precious's Mommy,
Sunday

Give her a day, Sunday. She should be fine. It's a stressful thing, to have an operation and to stay overnight at the vet's - she's probably overtired from being anxious. If she still seems dopey tomorrow, then call the vet. But I think this reaction is pretty normal. She's a cutie!

My guess is that she needs some recovery time ~ she just had surgery. I'm sure she will come around, but, like Karma said if it continues I'd call the vet. Along with have surgery, she spent the night away from home which I'm sure also adds to the stress.

She'll be her old self in no time I'm sure

Yep, such behavior is quite normal after the surgery. Females usually take a couple of days to bounce back and return to their normal selves. Males don't take quite as long to recover because neutering is not as invasive as spaying.

I would give her another day or two, and you should see quite a turn around in her. If this is not the case then I would contact the vet., but I suspect that she will be back to her feisty little self soon.

As far as the eating is concerned, if she is not interested in her kibble, try feeding her a little canned food just to get some food into her body. Her appetite will surely pick back up soon. Do be sure that she is drinking water as so she does not become dehydrated.

Hope all goes well!

Thanks Ya'all for all your encouragement, experience and support!

I realize how neurotic I sound after reading my own posts. By nature I am a "oh it will work itself out" kind of person. Believe it or not I do have 4 kids. I'm a lot more confident about my human parenting skills. LOL!

I have taken into account that Precious did just have surgery. Having had all 4 of my babies c-section, I realize that recovery is no picnic. I think it's harder to watch someone recover than to go through it yourself.

I did not consider the aspect of Precious having to spend 24 hours away from home... Thatfs sheds some light on some things.

I do have another question to throw out there. What, if anything, can I do about doggy razor burn? Precious is going spastic about licking, scratching and rubbing her groin area where they shaved her. It appears to me that it is not her incision that is causing her the most irritation, rather, where they shaved her. Her incision site is dry and in tact. Do any of you have any experience with doggy razor burn?

Thanks for bearing with me! (I will try to keep my neurosis in check for at least 24 hours, LOL!)

Precious's Mommy,
Sunday

I'm sure it's hard to watch your baby go through her recovery, I haven't been there yet so I don't know what that's like Here's to a speedy recovery for Precious!!

Thank you PooGild!

Yes, that is a picture of my Precious and I. It is one of the few times you can see both her eyes.

Hmmmm, wish I had some advice for you, but unfortunately I am not quite sure what to tell you. I would call your vet tomorrow and see what they have to say.

I know what you mean when you say it is hard to see her looking and feeling so miserable. I just wanted to take Mickey & Tigger's pain and endure it myself so they wouldn't have to go through it. Fortunately, they were back back to their usual selves in no time (the quiet was short-lived)!

I agree with PooGirl, that picture of you and Precious is adorable! Capturing a good shot of Mickey where you can actually see his eyes is quite the challenge so I can relate to you on that level!

Wishing Precious a speedy recovery as well,
Kristi

Hi Everybody!

Precious was a little more herself this morning. I was very encouraged. But, she is still licking and spazing out and not eating or drinking much. Then she started growling and whimpering. She has not eliminated today either. I called my vet. I'm waiting to hear back from them. My poor little baby. My heart just breaks for her. I wish I could do more. I hope I get a call back soon.

Precious's Mommy,
Sunday

I took Precious back to the vet yesterday and she had swelling. That does cause pain. My vet gave her a shot and sent us home with Rimadyl (carprofen). She is SOoo much better today. Now my biggest problem is keeping her from jumping.

I'm a happy and far less neurotic Mommy now.

Thanks Ya'all!
Sunday
