I have a 10 month old male longcoat chihuahua, and I really want another one. I actually now want a shortcoat. I just have a few questions. Would it be better to get another male or a female. And at what age should my chihuahua be before getting another puppy, or is there an age my dog would be too old to get another puppy.

I have always heard that dogs of opposite sex get along better with each other. But they would need to be altered or the male will try and breed with the female. That being said I have 3 females but there was some fighting in the process to establish a pecking order. I think depending on the dog another dog can be added at any age. Some dogs do better as pups when another dog is introduced but my first was an adult when we got the other two and she adapted well as soon as they knew she was the boss.

I have actually heard the exact opposite about which genders mix the best in regards to getting along...I guess it all depends on who you ask. I know many who have a male and female, two males, or two females and the vast majority of them get along very well. I do believe that a lot of it depends on the individual dog's temperament (specifically their degree of dominance).

Although, I do know that in certain breeds (which ones I am not positive) certain gender mixes are better than others.

I have two males (both from the same litter) and they get along beautifully...no problems whatsoever! They are often around other dogs, both male and female, and have absolutely no problems getting along with them. This was also the case with the two male Cockers that I had in my past.

As far as a time to introduce a new pup, I am not sure that there is a "right" time, but do be sure that your pup is open to the idea of having another pup around!

Good luck, and let us know how things go!

*Just a note, neutering/spaying is also very important in this issue!

If he is not fixed...get a female (and fix one of them at least) if he is fixed then you can really get either sex. It is all in the way they grow up together and how they are taught to get along. Since he is young you probably wont have a problem at all. I personally thing it is a good idea to get him or her while the boy is young.

Thanks for your advice! I think I want another boy. He is very good. We got him in July and then a kitten in December. They get along great. They sleep together, share the same water bowl(at the sametime!), and play together. I am hoping for another puppy will add to the fun.
