I've been reading the earlier the better, and it's a good idea to do it before the first heat. Thoughts? Thanks! IP: Logged |

Hi there PooGirl~ I think the general consensus for the spaying of a female and the neutering of a male is right around 6-7 months. I wouldn't do it any earlier than 6 months though! Mickey & Tigger were neutered when they were about 6.5 months old. And yes, most professionals (at least the ones I have spoken with) say that a female should be spayed before her first heat. PooGirl, I agree with BabyShihPoo.... my vet said to do it right around 6 months ("before they start bad habits"). And so that's when we had him neutered.... now, a lot of people have spayed earlier than that, but I can't imagine doing it sooner. A lady I work with took her two shihtzu puppies to get spayed and neutered at about 3 months and she had LOTS of problems with BOTH of them. I don't know if it was the age, or the vet, or whatever.... but they both were crying constantly after and developed infections. Personally, I think it was because they were so young. (but that's only my opinion). One thing to think about is if you're going to do the microchip, then you can do it at the same time and they don't feel a THING since they're already 'nighty night' IP: Logged |

Thanks you two! I just read something online that said you can do it at 8 weeks! I can't even imagine! Most of what I am reading is saying about 5 months, which seems a bit more reasonable. I forgot about microchipping... did either of you do this? IP: Logged |

About the microchip, YES...it is such a great idea to have it done. Although you will be very responsible with your pups, there is always that chance of your pups accidentally escaping. When someone finds your pup, they can easily have them scanned for a microchip which will contain your pup's identification information so your dog can be returned to you. Like MonsterBaiely mention, if it is possible (which it is in most cases), have it done during the time of their surgery. Even if you can't have it done during the surgery, or don't want it done during that time for whatever reason, it can always be done at a later time. All the dogs that I have seen who were being microchiped while awake/conscious barely even flinched. Also, at the time of your pup's spaying, have your vet check for any baby teeth that haven't fallen out yet. If there are any, it is a great idea to have those extracted during the surgery. When I took Mickey & Tigger in to be neutered, my vet looked for any baby teeth (all of which should have fallen out at that time). Coincidentally, both Mickey & Tigger had one baby tooth in the same spot that hadn't fallen out yet, so she went ahead and pulled those during the surgery. It all worked out wonderfully! OK, I think I am done babbling on now! Have an excellent day, [This message has been edited by MyBabyShihPoo (edited 03-07-2004).] IP: Logged |

Natalie was spayed at 4 months old. My mothers poodle and my aunt's shih tzu were also fixed at 4 months old.....no problems with any of them. Im not sure if I would be comfortable having it done any sooner but from what I've read it appears to be quite safe as long as proper precautions are taken with the anesthetics....there have been studies done on early spay/neuter showing no ill short term or long term effects. P.S. Natalie was microchipped at 8 months old. If I would have thought about it sooner I would have probably had it done at the time she was spayed. IP: Logged |

Thanks! =) I think the idea of microchipping is great, and we will certainly do so. How much does something like that cost? I don't have a vet yet, but of course I will ask when we have one Just curious. IP: Logged |

My vet charged $25.00 and then I had to pay $15.00 to register her. IP: Logged |

Thanks Nern That at least gives me a ball park figure as to what I can expect. I think it's a great idea! IP: Logged |
