My maltipoo, who will turn 1 next month, has just hit puberty, this is my best guess. He has sudden attraction to our female rat terrier, who is an outside dog, and is constantly after her. He has also recently just started hiking his leg when he goes to pee. Since, he is the first male dog that I have had I really don't know much about this. Will he spray things in the house, or do dogs spray? My dad said that when he let Romeo out of the basement the other morning he ran straight to a bag and hiked his leg to it and peed on it. He never does this when I am around so I am very worried! Is he peeing on everything and I have no idea. He is very good at letting us know when he needs to go outside, but he has started this excessive marking around the yard. What should I do? I am planning on getting him fixed, does anyone know if this will help? Feel so clueless and helpless in a sense. Thank you for reading my message and any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.

Hi there~

FIX/NEUTER HIM ASAP!!!

In almost every case, the problem is resolved after the surgery! Unfortunately, for the time being, you will just have to keep a VERY close eye on him. I would make an appointment ASAP though.

If you are worried about him marking his territory/spraying indoors when you can't keep a close eye on him, they do make dog diapers for that exact problem. Using dog diapers for the time being, until his surgery, may be something to consider. I know a few people who were in your same situation, and they used dog diapers for the time period before the surgery. They used the diapers when their dog was indoors and they couldn't watch them 100% of the time. All of them said it worked wonderfully (but the dog may need to be wiped off a bit if he attempted to spray while the diaper was on).

Just to let you know, in case you are wondering, your dog spraying/marking his territory is not uncommon in un-neutered male dogs. Neutering will fix the problem, as well as prevent other problems from occurring.

Best Regards,
Kristi

I forgot to mention one more thing in my previous post. If you are unsure if your pup has sprayed in your house, and are interested in knowing so you can clean it up (so it doesn't start to smell), a black light will show you all the spots. You will need a cordless black light so you can walk around and look in different places and rooms. To look for spots with your black light, it is best to do it at night since there is no daylight. Turn off all the lights in the room your are looking in, turn on the black light, and "scan" the floor and any other items/areas that he would be able to spray. You will need to have the black light somewhat close to the areas you are scanning.

Just thought I would share that tip with you!

Good luck!!!

Thank you so much for the advice. I think I will go to the pet store and look for the doggie diapers. I am in the process of finding a new vet, for various reasons, and I am going to call around first thing Monday and try to find out where to take him to get him neutered. I feel so much better just knowing that this does happen to other people. If anyone else has any horror stories like mine, I would love to hear them. Maybe it will help me to find out what other people have been through and know how they handled this. Thanks so much, Bridgett

not sure if it is available in your area, but have you thought about checking with your local shelter concerning neutering? I had my Jack neutered and micro-chipped at the anti-cruelty and it only cost 35.00. There are no income requirements.

I will try that to find out if I can get it done at the shelter. I am not sure. I called a couple of places last week, but am a little weary of the whole thing. I am changing vet's for various reasons. Thanks for the advice. I am going to try and get some pictures of Romeo up. I can't quite figure it all out. Thanks for the pics of your baby(baby's), can I just say "HOW CUTE!"

I just want to let you guys know that I made an appointment for Romeo to get neutered on Thursday morning. I can't wait to get this all over with. Can you guys tell me what is a good price range for neutering costs? I don't want to get screwed b/c I know absolutely nothing!LOL Anyway, I did try to call the local animal shelter, but they don't offer the services, oh well. Thanks.

Alabamamom, usually it goes by weight (the bigger the dog, the more $$ and vice versa). I know that it was $90 (plus extra if you decide to do the extra stuff) for me to do my dog and that was the price up to 20 lbs. Then again, I live in California so not sure if the prices are comparable for your area or not. If you are also thinking of getting the microchip (if you haven't already done it) then you might think about doing that at the same time.... might as well get him while he's asleep and doesn't feel anything, right?

I would say get him nuetered.
however this may not solve the problem
i have a dog who still must piss on everything.

You can buy what is called a 'belly band' it fits around a males waist and covers his penis when its put on snuggly it tends to stop them from marking.
as far as marking in the house, let him know you AND you family are the bosses, the shelter comes from you, the food comes from you guys and the love and attention comes from you guys.
MY little Havanese is at the same stage. He doesnt mark in the house though, he knows he'll get into troble if he does.

once he's neutered and if the problem still persists then try the belly bands.
if he's still marking through the belly bands then wet the piece that fits over his genitals then put it into the freezer, once its frozen then put it on him.
marking indoors is always hard to deal with becasue your discipline is only good if you catch him.

if you find that he is marking in the house was the area where is marked ASAP
use FANTASTIK or theres a specialy made product for EVERYWHERE I love it. its called TKO orange, its orange oil you mix up at home and then spray on. its works on ALL surfaces.
let me know if that helps

Thanks, Bailey's mom, that is around the prices that I have been quoted. Just wondering if I was quoted right. The places that quoted me around $90+, did not even ask his weight though, and that kind of seemed "weird" to me. I was quoted at $65 at two other vets, one which I have been referred to by a friend of a friend, and they asked his weight up front, which is around 9 lbs.
Claire, thank you also for your advice, you know I have not once caught him doing it in the house, he is quite good a letting us know when he wants to go outside. But my dad came over and let him out of the basement to go out while I was gone and he said that he ran straight to a bag in the kitchen floor and pee(d)(that word looks funny) all over it. I have never seen him do it. Can you tell me where to get the belly bands?, my husband and I looked at Petco and did not see them, maybe we were looking in the wrong place. Thanks for the advice, I will let you guys know if everything works out.

Be sure to thoroughly clean any marked spots. If they smell it there it inspires them to use it again! Use bleach, if you can.

Hey everyone, I got Romeo neutered today! What a relief. He did very well and hasn't been bleeding at all. He does have staples that will have to be taken out. Is it okay if he keeps licking himself there?

Alabamamom1~

That is GREAT that you were able to get him neutered, and I am glad to hear that he is doing well!!!

As far as the licking is concerned:

No, it is really not a good idea for him to be licking at the incision a lot. A little bit is fine, but not a lot. You don't want him licking a lot at the incision because the licking often leads to biting/chewing at the area, which all too often leads to the dog tearing open the incision. It actually happened to one of my mom's dogs...IT WAS AWFUL!!!

When I went to pick up my pups after their surgery, my vet. advised me to keep an eye on them to be sure they weren't licking at their incision a lot or I would need to use the dreaded lamp shade device on them. Well, of course, my pups were CONSTANTLY licking at it. Luckily, I was able to be home with them for the majority of the days to keep them from licking at their incision.

But, what was I to do at night when I slept, and for the times that I had to run out and do some errands? Since I didn't want to have to use the dreaded lamp shade devices, I had to do a little improvising. I went out and bought them machine washable dog diapers, and lined the inside of the diaper with a soft material (since the inside lining was plastic, which would not be very comfortable given their situation). I would put the diaper on them at night (I didn't put it on them the first night since I stayed up to watch them), and when I would leave since I obviously wouldn't be able to watch them at those times. It worked WONDERFULLY!!!

Just and idea for you!

Have an excellent day!
