We have noticed the last two days that Bailey has been itching/scratching under his chin A LOT. He doesn't normally scratch at all. Well, I went to look this morning and he has a sore/gooey/scabby "THING" there! EEEEEEEK!!! Poor guy!!! The vet is obviously not in today (it's Sunday), so I was wondering what I should do or put on it. Today was bath day anyways, so I gave him a bath and tried to pay extra attention to the area to try and clean it out. I also was able to soften up the scab (ewww) and GENTLY wipe/clean.

Any suggestions??? I want to put something on it to stop it from itching and to keep it clean (neosporin??) and mainly, I need to stop him from scratching it. This is the first time I've ever had something like this come up and I am CLUELESS as to what to put on it! Help...

It's not bleeding... it just sort of looks like it was something he's just scratched into a sore, ya know? Bless his heart, I feel awful for not noticing it last nite!!

Thank you ilovemaltipoos!!! I knew SOMEONE would know something on this board hehe.... I did end up putting some neosporin (antibacterial cream) on it... just a little cuz i wasn't sure if it was the right thing to do or not. He stopped scratching for a bit but then I think he was licking what came off on to his paw...... arghhhh.

As far as the benedryl, do you mean the pill/liquid form for him to swallow? or the benedryl topical?

vasaline will help also. It'll keep it moist and help with the itching. Does Baily have fleas? That could be a pin point to where the fleas are deficating or laying eggs. That will make an itchy spot.

Vaseline? really? I heard that wasn't good because it breeds bacteria! Hmmm...I was at the point of trying anything. But I ended up putting the neosporin on it and it seemed to work "okay"... I called the vet this morning and unfortunately they couldn't get him in today (he goes tomorrow). I was worried that I'd come home from work today and he would have scratched himself raw.... luckily it wasn't too terribly bad. It still looks awful tho Bless his heart.

And no, he doesn't have fleas.... he never has, luckily. The Frontline works great for that.... so I'm not sure WHAT on earth it could be. I did take him to the local school a couple of times last weekend (three day weekend) and perhaps its' something from that.... hmmmmm. who knows.... but I tell ya, I'm worried sick about my baby! And ya wonder why we dont' have any children! LOL

Bag Balm is also good for abrasions- a tin lasts forever and you can also use it on yourself (it stinks a bit, though.)

Just an update: we went to vet today and Bailey's "sore" was just a "hot spot"...(as opposed to something there, like a tick or something). The Dr said it probably just started out as an itch and Bailey scratched and scratched it to irritate it. Anyhow, the little fella got a steroid shot (for the scratching) and mommy got some meds to put on twice a day. We're going to watch for infection, but everything looked really good - considering! But boy oh boy, when she had to shave his little spot, I thought I was going to come out of my skin.... YYYYYIPES! (needless to say, I'm a WIMP! LOL)

OH and just FYI for those board readers -- Ilovemaltippoos was right: The vet also said that Bailey can take Children's Benadryl for the itching! I bought some today in case the steroid shot doesn't last long...

Thank you ilovemaltipoos! I never ended up having to give him the benadryl, the ointment worked wonders! It's a steroid ointment called Panalog... and it was amazing how fast it worked. His sore was pretty nasty and two days later the spot was barely there! I was sooooo happy.... it just tore me apart to see that "oowie"! Thanks again for the advice

That is great ! Glad to know he is better now .I would keep that cream on hand too .Think I will try that on Zena .She has hot spots every now and then and I have to use different ointments on her to see which heals the place the best .I will give the panalog a try .Thanks !
