How well do they mix?

I am just curious ~ I used to have a parakeet a few years ago and will be a puppy owner soon. It made me think of how the two would have reacted to each other!

Anyone have a dog & a bird?

When I lived with my mother I had parakeets and cockateils...our Shepherd x payed no attention to them at all. My mother currently has a cockateil and a Poodle and other than a little sniffing he does'nt pay much attention to the bird either.

My mom has a pikanees and she used (key word here is used) to have i budgies. One day her dog "Dutchess" i guess, got hungry. That was the end of the birds.

Thanks,
Christina

My poddle Cheri chased away neighborhood's and my aunt's hen.To Cheri it's no different btwn bird and hen.Whenever she see bird she will move her front legs like having a marathon. And she will run after the bird..I think she is having fun with the bird and hen.

I know a person with 6 dogs and a parrot...and the parrot gets on the floor and waddles around with all the dogs =) They're afraid of it! Course I suppose its very different with little birds. I would suggest keeping the cage where the dog absolutely cannot get to it. And dont put anything breakable anywhere near the cage either in case the dog would get daring. For instance..try to climb the nearby lamp to get to the birds.

I suppose it would depend a lot on the breed and the individual personality of the dog. For instance, Milo's mother's peke and mine seem to have very different intensities of prey drive.

My pekingese pretty much ignores the budgies that my friend used to bring over to my house; he just cocks his ears when they are being noisy after an initial period of "what's in the cage?" investigation. He is curious about small bunnies (just sniffs them and licks the tops of their heads) and seems to think that turtles are just moving rocks to be ignored.
