Jack is like a canine vacumn cleaner! He will ingest anything he comes in contact with, edible or not, So far I have had to throw away all the rag rugs in the house because he was chewing them to the point that his stool was full of the remants, I have found chewed off barbie hands , bolts and pieces of chewed up pencil in his stool. He has even managed to get into my coat pocket to find something to munch on! I am running around like a maniac making sure there is absolutely nothing on the floor that he can get ahold of, also not letting him out of my sight alone for a second. He has mega chewing toys and plenty of food and snacks so it is not a case of his being hungry. I know human babies usually outgrow this behaviour so I am holding out hope that, that will happen. Is this a behavior I can correct somehow, will he perhaps outgrow it? Any help would be appreciated.

Yep, Jack is being a typical puppy.

Everything is new to a puppy, therefore they have to check it out. Dog's don't have hands to discover and touch things, so what do they use? Yep, you guessed it, thier mouths!

Like you mentioned, try to keep everything you possibly can out of his reach, and watch him like a hawk. When you see him getting into something he shouldn't, firmly tell him "NO", and give him a chew/toy/etc. When he chews on appropriate items, be sure to reward him for doing so. Persistence & Patience is the key here!

For the times that you are unable to watch his every move, he should be confined in a room or area (with lots of chews/toys/etc.) where there is NOTHING he can get into! (I used/use our kitchen, which is gated off of course, so they can not escape.)

Most dogs do outgrow their "naughty" chewing behavior, granted that the owner teaches them right and wrong chewing. So, start now in teaching him!

I guess I am lucky, because my two dogs never chewed on aything they were/are not supposed to. When they were about 3.5 months old, they began to do a little chewing on the edge of the cabinets in our kitchen, but I caught on immediately to what they were doing, sprayed some sour apple on the edges, and they were never (and still aren't) interested in the cabinets again!

*Keeping a close eye on pups when they are young is so incredibly important due to the fact that some things they can get into, or eat, are VERY dangerous and sometimes deadly!

Basically, you need to "baby proof" your home!

Just hang in there, with your persistent and patient corrections, he WILL indeed learn right from wrong!!!

Wishing you the best of luck,
Kristi

Since you mentioned toys I thought I better add this one. I was told by my vet that while dogs will pass most things they eat the one thing they CANNOT pass is Lego's! These have to be surgically removed! So please if your kids have Lego's make sure the dog does not get a hold of them! They also can get slivers in their mouths with Lincoln logs. When my kids were young they were told that Lego's and logs had to be kept in their rooms and away from the dog.

Yep, typical puppy and no way around it! hehe...... Bailey was awesome in the beginning and then turned into a holy terror around 5 months old - chewing on the kitchen cabinets, baseboards, edge of the carpet, etc. The bitter apple stuff works AWESOME and definitely saved the day (and Bailey's life...hehe)!!
Altho, I still can't get him away from the toilet paper rolls -- I just can't see spraying the Bitter Apple on those, if you get my drift!?!? In fact, I may have to start a new post and see if anyone has found a way to stop that!
