My family hasn't had much luck with dogs. You see, our house is made of wood, and my dad is especially careful with the wood. Also, he can't have dogs that shed. I was thinking about a Yorkie because they're so small and they wouldn't scratch the wood too bad, and they don't shed at all, but then I heard that they are terrible with potty training- one of the worst!

My question is, do you think a Shitzu would be right for my family? Does it shed at all? and does it potty train easier than yorkies? Help would be appreciated!

Well they don't shed much. I think with any puppy you will have the mistake pee going on no matter what. Unless you end up with one from adoption that is older and potty trained already. They need constant grooming so their hair does not get matted. Daily brushing is a must. My poodle has never tinkled in the house. She was about 4 when I got her. Another thing you need to know about is dogs get upset stomaches and they will throw up. So hopefully your dad can handle things like that. Keeping the nailes filed very short would be wise too so's not to scratch the floors.

~Yes, Yorkies are notorious for being difficult to housebreak, but that is not to say it is impossible. Let's just say it is a challenge!

~Shih-tzu's can be so-so with housebreaking. Some shih-tzus catch on really quickly, while others take longer and are a little more challenging. There are no guarantees on how quickly a shih-tzu can be housebroken. Being consistent in the training does help though.

~As puttin510 said, shih-tzus are high maintenance. If you choose to keep the shih-tzu's coat shorter, that will reduce SOME of the maintenance time. But, you will have to bring your shih-tzu to a groomer fairly frequently, which is something to consider in respect to time and money.

~Shih-tzu's don't shed much, and are fairly good for allergy sufferers. What causes allergies is the dander produced by dogs. Some dogs have high dander, which provokes allergy symptoms in allergy sufferers; and some dogs have lower dander, which is good for allergy sufferers. There is no dog that is dander free, just low dander. But, please don't let that mislead you, some allergy sufferers may have problems (allergy wise) with low dander dogs. You really need to be around the type of dog to know whether or not you would have problems.

~Not to scare you, but if you consider a Yorkie, please read up and make sure you fully understand terrier breed characteristics!!! To some, the terrier tendencies come as rude surprise, which sadly leads to many ending up in shelters!

Best wishes with your decision,
Kristi

My Sydney is a 3 yr old Shih Tzu. I keep her hair on the shorter side. All dogs shed. I brush her daily to keep the shedding low. She was very easy to potty train and is very smart. My neighbor has a Yorkie and my father had one too. They tend to be very hyper and yappy. With obedience you can control the barking. All dogs take time, love care and a lot of patience. I would make sure your father can handle this before getting a dog.
